Sharing is Caring

The Padres beat the Braves in the first two of three, winning their second straight series and finishing their road trip 4-2. Their four-game win streak was the longest of the season and also featured four straight saves by closer Heath Bell. The Padres will take their latest taste of winning back home to Petco Park when they begin an 11-game home stand on Thursday, with the first four against Houston. Below is a recap of the last three games of their great road trip.

May 30th, 2011 Padres 3, Braves 2 (10 innings)

WP Chad Qualls (3-2) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 1BB 3K 0HR

LP George Sherill (1-1) 1IP 2H 1R 1ER 0BB 2K 1HR

S Heath Bell (13) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

Kyle Philips hit his first career homer to lead off the top of the 10th inning and Heath Bell pitched a perfect ninth to give the Padres a come from behind victory on Memorial Day.

Ryan Ludwick and Brian McCann each had two RBI’s each, in both the first and third innings, to tie the game at two apiece. McCann went three for five.

The Braves left 15 runners on base while the Padres left 12.

Bell saved his third straight game getting both Martin Prado and McCann to flie out before striking out Eric Hinske looking.

May 31st, 2011 Padres 5, Braves 4

WP Mat Latos (3-6) 6IP 5H 2R 2ER 4BB 7K 0HR

LP Mike Minor (2-6) 6IP 8H 3R 3ER 3BB 4K 0HR

S Heath Bell (14) 1IP 1H 1R 1ER 1BB 0K 0HR

Mat Latos pitched six solid innings and the Padres scored three runs in the top of the seventh to go up for good and hand him a win in his second straight start. Latos struck out seven while walking four. His only hiccup occurred in the fourth when he gave up a two-run double to Freddie Freeman to lose the lead in the bottom of the fourth.

Eric Patterson pinch hit for Latos and drew a walk before stealing second. He then scored on Chris Denorfia’s single to centerfield. Chase Headley, Ryan Ludwick, and Jorge Cantu then each singled to give the Padres a 5-2 lead. Ludwick finished the day 4-5, knocking in his 35th RBI.

Heath Bell racked up his fourth save in as many games, but not without adversity. The self-proclaimed “Drama Queen” walked Jordan Schaeffer with one out. After Martin Prado flied out, Schaeffer stole second without a throw. Chipper Jones then singled him in to bring cleanup hitter Brian McCann up as the go ahead run. But Bell induced a pop fly to end the game and give the Padres another series win.

June 1st, 2011 Braves 4, Padres 3

WP Tommy Hanson (6-4) 6IP 3H 2R 2ER 2BB 4K 1HR

LP Clayton Richard (2-6) 4.2IP 8H 3R 3ER 4BB 1K 0HR

S Craig Kimbrel (16) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR

Clayton Richard’s struggles continued he lost his sixth game, snapping the Padres season high four-game win streak. He allowed eight hits and four walks before being replaced by Pat Neshek with two out in the fifth.

He gave up four straight one out hits in the bottom of the first, culminating with Freddie Freeman’s single, scoring Chipper Jones and giving the Braves a two run lead.

Kyle Phillips two run shot in the second brought home Chris Denorfia and tied the game in the top of the second.

Richard gave up back to back doubles to Brian McCann and Freeman to put the Braves ahead, 3-2. Martin Prado’s solo homer in the sixth off Pat Neshek put the Braves up 4-2.

Jorge Cantu’s sac-fly in the ninth brought it within one. Kyle Phillips hit a two out single in the ninth bringing fellow rookie Logan Forsythe to the plate. Forsythe flew out deep to John Schaffer to end the game and give rookie Craig Kimbrel his 16th save.
