The Rockies beat the Padres 5-3 to win the series against the two NL West rivals Wednesday afternoon. The loss kept the Padres from moving out of last place and put a damper on an otherwise exciting day in San Diego. Nick Hundley came back from an oblique injury that had sidelined him since May 5th. But the big news of the day was who traveled on the plane ride from Tucson with him. Top hitting prospect Anthony Rizzo arrived in San Diego today and is expected to start at first base on Thursday against the Nationals. The Padres will play them through Sunday to complete the 11-game home stand. So far they are 4-3 through the first seven games. Below is how they fared against the Rockies over the last three.
June 6th, 2011 Rockies 3, Padres 0 WP Clayton Mortenson (2-3) 6IP 5H 0R 0ER 2BB 3K 0HR LP Clayton Richard (2-7) 7IP 5H 1R 1ER 3BB 8K 0HR S Huston Street (16) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR Clayton Mortenson and five other relievers combined to shutout the Padres for the Major League leading 10th time. It was also the seventh time the Padres have failed to score a run in front of their fans at Petco Park. Clayton Richard took the loss having given up a run in the first on what could have been deemed his best outing of the season. He struck out a career high eight batters while holding the Rockies to only five hits while walking three. Two of those strikeouts came in the first, with a triple by Chris Nelson in between. Troy Tulowitzki then hit a hard grounder up the middle off Richard’s foot, allowing Nelson to score and give the Rockies a 1-0 lead. The Padres left 11 men on base. Most evident in the bottom of the eighth when the Padres left the bases loaded when Alberto Gonzalez struck out swinging. The half inning lasted 27 minutes thanks to reliever Rafael Bentancout, who at times took over 30 seconds between pitches. Bentancourt faced four batters in 2/3 of the inning. The Rockies added two more runs in the ninth starting with Seth Smith’s RBI triple. He then scored on a single by Chris Ianetta to put the Rockies ahead, 3-0. Huston Street struck out two in the ninth without allowing a hit for his 16th save.
June 7th, 2011 Padres 2, Rockies 0 WP Tim Stauffer (2-4) 8IP 4H 0R 0ER 1BB 8K 0HR LP Ubaldo Jimenez (1-6) 7IP 6H 2R 2ER 0BB 2K 0HR S Heath Bell (17) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR Tim Stauffer pitched lights out, going eight innings without allowing a run and Heath Bell closed it out as the Padres answered Monday’s shutout on Tuesday night with one of their own. Stauffer was magnificent striking out eight batters and walking only one on 97 pitches. 66 of them were thrown for strikes. The Padres offense still struggled but was able to capitalize on a couple timely hits. With two outs in the fifth Kyle Phillips singled and then took second on a wild pitch. Alberto Gonzalez then hit a ball up the middle that glanced on second baseman Chris Nelson’s glove. As Phillips headed home, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki picked up the ball and shorthopped it to catcher Jose Maorales, who couldn’t handle the throw as Phillips slid in safely at the plate also allowing Gonzalez to reach second. Tim Stauffer Then singled to left field scoring Gonzalez to put the Padres up 2-0. Heath Bell took over for Stauffer in the ninth to get his 17th save in 18 tries. Stauffer’s 8.0 innings pitched was a career high having not yet recorded an out in the eighth inning before.
June 8th, 2011 Rockies 5, Padres 3 WP Matt Lindstrom (1-1) 1IP 2H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR LP Heath Bell (2-2) 1IP 2H 2R 2ER 1BB 1K 0HR S Huston Street (17) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR After trading shutouts over the first two games, both teams put a few runs on the board in the rubber game, resulting in the Rockies win over the Padres 5-3, giving them victories in both the game and the series. The Padres got on the board first when Alberto Gonzalez hit one deep in the 5.5 hole with the bases loades. Troy Tulowitzki made a nice backhanded grab, and threw across his body to get Gonzalez at first base, but all other runners were safe, including Ryan Ludwick who crossed the plate to put the Padres up 1-0. Todd Helton hit a two-out solo homer just beyond the Petco porch in right to tie the game in the third. Tulowitzki, Seth Smith, and Ty Wiggington then hit consecutive singles, the third scoring Tulowitzki from second to put the Rockies ahead, 2-1. Tulowitzki would have another RBI single in the fifth, scoring Todd Helton from third to go up 3-1. The Padres got starting pitcher Dustin Moseley off the hook for the loss with a two-run sixth inning. Chase Headley walked and then advanced to third base on Brad Hawpe’s single. Headley then scored on a wild pitch by starter Aaron Cook. He was then replaced by Mark Belisle after intentionally walking Jorge Cantu. Belisle then gave up an RBI single to Alberto Gonzalez to tie the game at 3-3. The Padres then had the go ahead run at third with one out in the ninth, just recalled Nick Hundley hit a grounder to the pitcher who threw out Chris Denorfia at the plate. The managed another single by Jorge Cantu but Gonzalez flew out to center to end the inning. The Rockies score two in the top of the ninth off closer Heath Bell, who took the loss in a non-save situation. Troy Tolowitzki hit a two run double to shallow right with runners on second and third to put the Rockies ahead for good. Huston Street pitched a perfect ninth for the 17th save of the season.
