After scratching and clawing to a 3-1 victory to start the series, The Padres dropped consecutive 6-3 games to the Rockies to lose the series in Coors Field. Anthony Rizzo saw his average drop from .300 to .190 as he collected one hit and zero RBI in his first trip to Colorado. The Friars hope to rebound as the fly to Minnesota on Thursday to begin interleague play on Friday. Here is a recap of the series in Denver.

Anthony Bass made his Major League debut filling in for the injured Dustin Moseley and did not disappoint, allowing only one run in five innings to stop a three game losing streak. Bass struck gave up only five hits but walked four batters.

The Padres started the game off with three straight singles by Chris Denorfia, Jason Bartlett, and Chase Headley. Ryan Ludwick then hit a fly ball to right field that was caught, but allowed Denorfia and Bartlett to advance, putting the Padres up 1-0 with runners at the corners with one out. But Anthony Rizzo grounded into a double play to end the Padres scoring threat.

The Rockies tied the game in the game in the fourth inning with a two out rally started by Ty Wigginton’s two-out walk. Wigginton stole second and then scored on Chris Blackmon’s single to centerfield. After Blackmon also stole second, the Padres intentionally walked Chris Ianetta to face pitcher Aaron Cook. Bass got Cook to ground into a fielder’s choice, forcing Ianetta out a second base to end the inning.

Ryan Ludwick got another RBI in the bottom of the sixth when he grounded out to Troy Tulowitzki, scoring Bartlett from third to put the Friars up 2-1.

Alberto Gonzalez added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when he hit the ball up the middle off Colorado reliever Rafael Bentancourt after Cameron Maybin tripled. He was able to beat out the throw to first after Betancourt recovered the ball.

Heath Bell walked Jason Giambi with two outs to bring up 2010 NL MVP candidate Carlos Gonzalez as the tying run. But Bell struck him out to end the game and earn his 18th save in 19 tries.
