Sharing is Caring

WP: Richard (3-9)
LP: Lackey (5-6)

The soggy elements couldn’t stop the Padres as they were able to topple the Red Sox and take the series to end the road trip on a high note. Clayton Richard battled through three rain delays and still had a terrific outing.

The Good

Clayton Richard (5IP 8H 1R 1ER 2BB 2K): Very good outing from the left-hander. Had good command of his fastball which the soggy weather would have made it harder to do. Never “cooled off” during the three rain delays.

Ernesto Frieri (2IP 2H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K): Excellent comeback for "Ernasty". Things looked like they were going to repeat themselves when he hit Sutton but he didn’t let that get in his mind this time and continuned with this good outing.

Will Venable (1-4, HR, R, BB): First ever career lead off home run and first since September of last season. Hopefully this is a sign of a turn around for him and starts to get hot.

Cameron Maybin (2-3, 2 1B, R, BB): He and Orlando Hudson combine to have a multi-hit day.

The Bad

Anthony Rizzo (0-2, BB, R, K): Batting .158 in 38 AB has only 6 hits to his name. The kid is just crushing it but baseballs are finding gloves. If he controls the strikeout some more he will definitely improve a lot.

The Ugly

Jesus Guzman (0-4, 2K): Two strikeouts and left runners in scoring position twice in the game. Not good.

The Weather: Rain and baseball do not mix well at all. Infields become slippery which could lead to injuries as 200 pound men fall while rounding bases. Baseballs become waterlogged and heavy and hard to grip. This can be dangerous as a wild fastball comes screaming in on a batter because the pitcher couldn’t grip it. After the game became an official game, it should have been called. Instead it lasted three more innings. Here is something to think about. That was the exact same umpiring crew that let the April 8 game to be delayed multiple times before eventually calling it.
