WP: Clayton Richard (4-9)
Padres pour on the hits and combined with another great outing from left hander Clayton Richard and Heath "Heater" Bell's third consecutive save in as many outings, help bring the Padres a 4-2 victory and guarantees a third consecutive series win and look to bring the first series sweep to PETCO Park.
The Good
Cameron Maybin (3-3, 2 1B, 2B, 2R): Cam had an excellent day. He batted a thousand and crossed home plate twice. But, the key play he made was in the 4th inning where he faked out the left fielder into tagging which caused him to make an errant throw over the third baseman's head which lead to his second run of the night
Chase Headley (2-4, 2 1B): Chase continues to prove why the Padres would be just lost and desolate without him. He has great place discipline. He worked two full counts and puts the ball in play. Chase doesn't hit for power but for contact which is how a hitter beats PETCO Park.
Clayton Richard (7 IP 5H 2R 2ER 1BB 4K): Has a good outing in Boston where he was delayed more than La Guardia at Christmas time in a snowstorm, came up to record his first ever pinch hit, and now makes another great outing by going seven innings and giving up only two runs and striking out four. These kinds of successes are what the Padres need to turn things around.
The Bad
Baserunning Miscues: Padres runners have been thrown out at home twice this series and today, picked off, and caught in a rundown trying to steal. These kinds of miscues kill rallies. Will Venable being picked off could have been an insurance run in the 7th inning.
The Ugly
The Strikeout: Once again, seven batters were sent quickly from whence they came without leaving the batter's box. That is over one quarter of the Padres outs wasted at the plate. Even worse, it was all by the same pitcher. It may seem like a bit of a broken record but it cannot be stressed enough how much a high number of strike outs just really hurt a team offensively. Padres hitters really need to work on lowering their strike out rate.
