The Padres opened the second half of 2011 with a disappointing extra-inning loss after a blown save by All-Star closer Heath Bell. After losing game two, extending their season high losing streak to seven, The Friars exploded for 11 runs against the defending world champions with Mat Latos going head-to-head with Matt Cain for the final game of the series. But neither pitcher would get a decision as the NL West rivals bookended the series with another extr-inning affair, with San Francisco victorious in both. The Padres hope to turn their fortunes around after a travel day on Monday to Miami to face the Marlins for a three-game series starting Tuesday. Below is a game-by-game breakdown of the series dropped to the San Francisco Giants. July 14th, 2011 Giants 6, Padres 2 WP Santiago Casilla (2-1) 2IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR LP Luke Gregerson (2-3) 0.2IP 1H 5R 0ER 3BB 1K 0HR S Brian Wilson (27) 0.2IP 0H 0R 0ER 1BB 0K 0HR Heath Bell hadn’t allowed a home run in 99 innings and 102 at-bats before he hung a two-strike curveball to Aubrey Huff that the Giants first baseman deposited into the seats in right field to tie the game 1-1 with no outs in the ninth. Up to that point the Padres held a one-run advantage behind seven shutout innings behind Aaron Harang and one scoreless by Mike Adams, also. The Padres held that lead since Chase Headley singled in Chris Denorfia with two-on in the third. After that neither team could muster a run until Huff’s blast in the ninth. Neither team would score again until the Giants blew it open in the 12th. Luke Gregerson walked the first two batters he faced and then misplayed a bunt, allowing all runners to be safe. He then nearly pitched out of the jam, getting Miguel Tejada to pup up on a shallow foul ball and striking out Andres Torres. But he walked Mike Fontenot to give the Giants the lead and then allowed a two-run single by Pablo Sandoval. Ernesto Frieri then relieved Gregerson and allowed consecutive run scoring singles to put the Giants up, 6-1. The Padres made a valiant effort in the bottom half of the inning, loading the bases with one-out so Will Venable could sacrifice in Cam Maybin from third. Chris Denorfia then drew a walk to reload the bases and put the tying run at the plate. But Jason Bartlett’s grounder was snagged by the pitcher Brian Wilson to end the game.
July 15th, 2011 Giants 6, Padres 1 WP Tim Lincecum (8-7) 6IP 3H 1R 1ER 3BB 7K 0HR LP Dustin Moseley (2-9) 6IP 7H 4R 4ER 2BB 3K 1HR
Andres Torres went had three hits, three runs scored and batted in two to team with Tim Lincecum’s six-inning one-run effort to help the Giants cruise to a 6-1 victory over the home team Padres Friday night at Petco Park. Torres first scored in the first on a sacrifice fly by Pablo Sandoval. The Giants added another run the next inning by a solo shot by Cody Ross. The Padres cut the lead in half with Orlando Hudson’s RBI groundout to second baseman Mike Fontenot allowing Alberto Gonzalez to score from third. Gonzalez came in for Chase Headley in the bottom of the first after the Padres leading hitter left with a strained calf starting the game at third base. Torres also had an RBI single and then scored from third whe Fontenot was caught stealing second in the fifth. Torres then hit a RBI double in the seventh and the scored on a wild pitch by Ernesto Frieri later that inning to put San Francisco ahead, 6-1. The loss dropped San Diego’s losing streak to a season high seven games.
July 16th, 2011 Padres 11, Giants 3 WP Cory Luebke (3-3) 7IP 4H 2R 2ER 1BB 5K 1HR LP Barry Zito (3-2) 3.2IP 7H 8R 8ER 4BB 3K 2HR
The Padres jumped on Barry Zito and never relented, rocking the San Francisco starter for eight runs in route to a laugher over their hated rivals, 11-3 Saturday night. Cory Luebke shut down the Giats over seven innings, allowing two runs while striking out five. Barry Zito walked two Padres in the first an paid for it, throwing 82 mph cutter to Jesus Guzman that ended up in the left field stands giving the Padres a 3-0 lead. Guzman then would hit a two-out double in the bottom of the third, scoring Jason Bartlett from second and allowing Chris Denorfia to reach third from the throw. Orlando Hudson would then knock all three in with a homer to left field, putting the Padres up 7-0. After a Pablo Sandoval led off the fourth with a triple down the right field line, Cody Ross would hit a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Giants on the board. The Padres would get that run back in the bottom half of the inning when Cameron Maybin easily scored from third on Denorfia’s opposite field single. Miguel Tejada hit a solo homer in the top of the sixth to cut the lead six. But San Diego added three more in the bottom of the seventh when Rob Johnson hit a bases loaded single to center field, scoring Denorfia and Hudson to put the Padres up 11-2. The Giants scratched another inconsequential run on the board in the ninth when Chris Stewart scored from first on a two-out RBI double to left-center by Mike Fontenot off of Luke Gregerson.
July 17th, 2011 Giants 4, Padres 3 (11innings) WP Javier Lopez (5-1) 2IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR LP Chad Qualls (4-4) 1.1IP 2H 1R 1ER 2BB 0K 0HR S Brian Wilson (28) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 3BB 0K 0HR
Kyle Phillips had a day he’d rather forget, failing to throw out six Giants basestealers while also bunting into a 2-5-3 double play with runners on first and second with no outs in the second. Two of those steals came from Emanuel Burris who also scored the game-winning run on a suicide squeeze perfectly placed by former Padres catching prospect Chris Stewart, to give the Giants a series deciding 4-3 victory in 11 innings on Sunday. Both Mat Latos and Matt Cain lived up to the billing of the battle between young stars, but both earned no decisions. Latos struck out five over seven innings, allowing three runs whil Cain pitched six, allowing three while fanning nine Friars. The Padres jumped ahead in the first with a sacrifice fly by Ryan Ludwick with runners at the corners and one out in the bottom of the first. But the Giants answered back with a sacrifice fly by Cody Ross to center field to tie the game. With two out in the sixth, Nate Schierholtz singled in Mike Fontenot from second base to put the Giants ahead, 2-1. But the Padres rallied back in the bottom half of the inning, starting when Everth Cabrera reached first base safely on a swinging strikeout after Giants catcher Eli Whiteside argued with home plate umpire Marvin Hudson that Cabrera had fouled off the ball. Cameron Maybin then singled before Ryan Ludwick was hit in the hand by Matt Cain , putting a Padre at every base. Orlando Hudson then delivered again lining a single to centerfield, scoring two and putting Latos back in line for the win. But with two out in the seventh, Eli Whiteside stole his first base of his career and then scored the tying run on Andres Torres’s single to right center. Neither team would score again until the squeeze play in the top of the eleventh. In the bottom half, the Padres were unable to take advantage of three walks by closer Brian Wilson, having bunted into a double play after first two and grounding out into fielder’s choice at second after the third walk, ending the game.
