The Padres needed a change of venue to get out of the funk that had them losing eight of their last nine games. Butit was in familiar territory that Cameron Maybin shined. Moving into the third spot of the order vacated by injured third baseman Chase Headley, Marbin had nine hits in 14 at-bats against the team that trade him last winter. He also made several fine plays in the field, including robbing former teammate Logan Morrison of a home run on Wednesday while also stealing five bases. The series also saw the Padres scoring first and holding leads in all three games, totaling nine first-inning runs. The Padres will fly to Philadelphia for a three game series against the Phillies without rookie firstbaseman Anthony Rizzo, who was sent back to Triple A Tucson after hitting just .143 since his call-up, June 9th. The Padres will see Kyle Blanks for the first time in 2011. Blanks then was sent to Tucson after Rizzo went to San Diego, and hit .351 with 11 home runs and 35 RBI in 134 at-bats. Below is a game-by-game recap of the Padres dominance in South Florida. July 19th, 2011 Padres 4, Marlins 0 WP Tim Stauffer (6-6) 6IP 4H 0R 0ER 2BB 4K 0HR LP Anibal Sanchez (6-3) 6IP 7H 2R 2ER 2BB 7K 0HR S Heath Bell (27) 0.1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR
Tim Stauffer and four relievers combined for a six hit shutout, giving the Padres just their second win in the last 10 games. Caeron Maybin was 2-4 with a RBI and run scored against his former team. He stole two bases on the day also. The Friars jumped to an early lead in the first after Maybin singled and stole second before consecutive RBI singles by Ryan Ludwick and Orlando Hudson. The Padres added another in the seventh was safe at first on a throwing error by pitcher Steve Cishek, allowing Logan Forsythe to score from third. Will Venable singled and stole second base in the ninth before Maybin batted him in for the Padres fourth run of the game. Luke Gregerson came to pitch the bottom of the ninth in a non-save situation. But after giving up a single and a two-out walk to Mike Cameron, Bud Black wasted no time bringing in closer Heath Bell to face catcher John Buck. After a wild pitch that advanced both runners to scoring position, Bell induced a fly-ball to right field that was caught by Venable to end the game and give Bell his 27th save of the season. July 20th, 2011 Padres 11, Marlins 3 WP Aaron Harang 5.1IP 7H 3R 3ER 3BB 5K 1HR LP Ricky Nolasco 1.1IP 9H 9R 9ER 2BB 3K 1HR Everything the Marlins threw out there the Padres hit. Jesus Guzman had his second four RBI night in four games and the Padres scored 13 runs on 14 hits in just the first two innings alone. Ryan Ludwick added four RBIs also, going 2-4 with a double. Jason Bartlett, Cameron Maybin, and Rob Johnson recorded three hits apiece also. Will Venable started the game off reaching for a ball low and outside and backhanding it over the right-field fence for a leadoff home run. After Bartlett drew a walk Maybin singled before Ludwick doubled them both in. Guzman then got his first of three hits, a single to shallow right field to score Ludwick and put the Padres up 4-0. Things got worse for Florida starter Ricky Nolasco in the second when he gave back to back singles by Venable and Bartlett. Maybin then singled in Venable with Bartlett advancing to third on the play. Nolasco then struck out Ludwick for the first out before Maybin stole second. Florida manager Jack McKeon opted to walk Orlando Hudson to load the bases and put the force back into play and face Guzman. Guzman then cleared the base with a double down the third base line, putting the Padres up 8-0 and prompting McKeon to pull Nolasco in favor of Burke Badenhop. Badenhop didn’t fare much better, giving up a run-scoring double to Alberto Gonzalez. He then gave up consecutive singles to Johnson and then Aaron Harang, the latter scoring Gonzalez. After a Venable walk, Bartlett singled to score Johnson and keep the bases loaded. Maybin struck out before Ludwick singled again, scoring Harang and Venable before Bartlett was thrown out at third to end the inning with the Padres up 13-0. The Marlins added a run in the fourth when Mike Stanton singled in Logan Morrison from second base. They also scored two more in the sixth on Hanley Ramirez’s solo home run followed by Dewayne Wise’s run scoring double to center, scoring Stanton. Maybin had another big hit in the seventh, scoring Jason Bartlett from second on a double to left-center with one out to put the Padres up 14-3.
July 21st, 2011 Padres 5, Marlins 3 WP Dustin Moseley (3-9) 6IP 5H 3R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR LP Javier Vasquez (6-9) 4.1IP 8H 5R 5ER 3BB 6K 0HR S Heath Bell (28) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR
The Padres jumped all ove the Marlins again to start the game, this time with a leadoff double by Will Venable. Jason Bartlett then hit a single to right field to put the Padres up 1-0. Cameron Maybin then hit another of his patented infield singles on a ground ball to shortstop Hanley Ramirez. Jesus Guzman then doubled on a sharp line drive to right fielder Mike Stanton, scoring Bartlett and Maybin and putting the Padres up 3-0. After a one-out bunt single by Omar Infante, Logan Morrison lifted a ball to deep center heade out of the park before Maybin leaped up and snagged the ball, robbing Morrison of a two-run homer. With Dustin Moseley up in the top of the second, the grounds crew rolled out the tarp while ushers moved people to cover from the stands with severe storming and lightning warnings. Two hours and 29 minutes later, play resumed. The Padres score again in the third inning when Orlando Hudson from second base with a single to right field. Maybin singled and then stole second base for his 18th steal of the year. Maybin went 4-4 aginst his former team. The Padres loaded the bases in the fifth on consecutive singles by Bartlett and Maybin. After a double steal that netted their 21st and 19th steals respectively, Marlins skipper Jack McKeon chose to intentionally walk Hudson to load the bases. On a 3-1 count, Chris Denorfia took a slider for a run-scoring walk, putting the Padres up 5-0. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Brett Hayes hit what looked to be a routine inning-ending double-play ball that was misplayed by Jason Bartlett allowing everyone to reach safely. After Greg Dobbs flew out to Maybin for the second out, Emilio Bonifacio singled to center, scoring Mike Stanton from second. Omar Infante the tripled in both runners to bring the Marlins with in two runs, and prompt a visit from Padres pitching coach, Darren Balsley. Moseley then induced a ground ball to second baseman Orlando Hudson, who threw out Morrison for the third out. With two out and runners on second and third, Chad Qualls got Infante to pop-up near the stands in shallow right field. O-Dog made an amazing inning-ending lunging catch before he crashed head and neck first into the wall, where he laid on the ground without movement for several minutes before being carted off by paramedics. It was later reported that Hudson was able to change into his street clothes and walk out of the clubhouse unassisted before heading to the hospital for precautionary tests. Mike Adams would shut down the Marlins in the eighth, striking out the first two before getting a groundout to second by Gaby Sanchez. Heath Bell then came in and pitched a perfect ninth, including two strikeouts as well, to complete the sweep for the Padres.
