After the dust settled after the trade deadline at 1:00pm Sunday, the Padres had traded both Mike Adams and Ryan Ludwick to the Rangers and Indians, respectively. But the big news of the day might be who had not been trade, All-Star closer Heath Bell. Bell had been the main player in many trade scenarios involving several teams but as the deadline expired, he remained with the Padres. After dropping the first two games, the Padres battled back down one in the eighth with a six-run explosion to easily win the last game. They also brought in Bell to close out the game in a non-save situation. Bell retired the side, striking out two in a perfect ninth. The Padres will move forward starting with a three game series against the Dodgers beginning Monday. Here is a game by game recap of the Padres series against the Rockies over the weekend. July 29th, 2011, Rockies 3, Padres 2 WP Jason Hammel (6-10) 6.1IP 5H 2R 2ER 3BB 5K 0HR LP Tim Stauffer (6-8) 7IP 8H 3R 3ER 1BB 3K 0HR S Huston Street (28) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR Tim Stauffer surrendered four singles in the second, scoring two runs and balked in a third, proving to be the difference in the game of their 3-2 loss Friday night. Stauffer surrendered singles to Troy Tulowitzki and Seth Smith. After advancing t second & third on a groundout, Ian Stewart & Chris Ianetta hit another pair of consecutive singles to put Colorado up 2-0. Stauffer then balked in another run to put the Rockies up three before getting out of the inning. Jason Hammel pitched well over six innings, having only given up two runs in the bottom of the third. Cam Maybin hit a one out double and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Orlando Hudson then singled him in to score the Padres first run. After stealing second, the O-Dog came around and scored on a RBI single by Chase Headley to right field. Ludwick then struck out before Guzman flew out to end the inning with Hudson stranded in scoring position. The Padres had another chance in the seventh after Kyle Blanks drew a walk with one out. The Rockies then brought in Matt Lindstrom who struck out Maybin before giving up a single to Hudson, putting runners at the corners with two outs. Matt Reynolds was brought in and walked Chase Headley to load the bases before he was pulled in favor of Matt Lindstrom. Lindstrom got Ryan Ludwick to pop up to right-center to end the Padres scoring threat. Huston Street came in and recorded two outs before Maybin doubled to put the tying run in scoring position. But Hudson grounded out to Street who tossed the ball to first to end the game, 3-2 in favor of Colorado. July 30th, 2011 Rockies 10, Padres 6 WP Esmil Rogers (4-1) 5IP 1H 1R 1ER 1BB 4K 0HR LP Aaron Harang (9-3) 5.2IP 6H 6R 6ER 2BB 6K 1HR Colorado overcame a large deficit resulting to one of th more bizarre beginnings of any game this year to retake the lead and keep pouring it on as they beast the Padres, 10-6 Saturday night. Ubaldo Jimenez took the mound in the bottom of the first inning amid rumors he had been traded with fellow teammate Esmil Rogers warming up in the bullpen at the time of the first pitch. But Jiminez, obviously affected by the speculation, surrendered his two run lead and then some with a very shaky inning. After drawing an leadoff walk, Cam Maybin advanced to third on Eliezer Alfonso’s throwing error trying to pick him off. After Orlando Hudson struck out, Headley walked to put runners at the corners. Ludwick then tied the game, scoring both runners with a two-run double. Jiminez then walked red-hot Jesus Guzman before striking out Chris Denorfia. Alberto Gonzalez then doubled to score both runners as well to give the Padres a two-run lead. That would be it for Ubaldo, as he started hugging teammates and coaches in the dugout as he found out he indeed had been traded to the Indians. Rogers took over for Jiminez down 4-2, with Colorado’s two runs scored on a two-out, two-run shot by Tulowitzki off the Western Metal Supply Building. The Rockies added another run in the fourth when Aaron Harang gave up consecutive two-out doubles Chris Nelson and Ian Stewart. After allowing a leadoff single to Todd Helton, Harang retired Tulowitzki and Seth Smith. Chris Nelson then launched a ball over Maybin’s head in center that one-hopped over the wall, forcing Helton to stop at third instead of easily scoring the tying run. Bud Black then had Harang walk Ian Stewart intentionally before he brought in Luke Gregerson to face Eliezer Alfonso with a force at every base. Gregerson then hung a slider that Alfonso clobbered into the Western Metal Supply Building stands to give the Rockies a three run lead. The Padres chipped one away the next inning When Guzman scored from third on a groundout by Gonzalez. But Gregerson gave up another RBI on a single by Nelson to put the Rockies up 8-5. Ernesto Frieri came in and then walked two consecutive batters, the last with the bags full to put the Padres down four runs. Tulowitzki and Guzman each had RBI doubles in the eighth to push their teams to the final score, 10-6.
July 31st, 2011, Padres 4, Diamondbacks 3 WP Chad Qualls (5-5) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR LP Rex Brothers (1-1) 0.0IP 1H 3R 3ER 2BB 0K 0HR Before the game the Padres said goodbye to two popular players, having trade both Mike Adams and Ryan Ludwick before the game. Ludwick was scratched from the starting lineup just minutes before the game started and was replaced by Kyle Blanks. The Rockies took advantage early having scored runs in both the second and third innings. Ryan Spillbroughs knocked in Troy Tulowitzki from third with a one-out sacrifice fly in the second. The next inning starter Wade LeBlanc gave up three consecutive singles, the last by Tulowitzki who knocked in David Fowler to put the Rockies ahead 2-0 in the third inning. But the Padres answered back the next inning when Jesus Guzman singled in Chase Headley on a slow roller to third base to cut the lead in half. Bu Chris Nelson continued to punish the Padres, this time with a two-out RBI single with runners on the corners in the fifth. Jason Bartlett led off the sixth with a stand-up double to left field. After Chase Headley struck out and Blanks flew out to right, Guzman knocked in Bartlett from second when he doubled to left center, cutting the lead back to one. In the bottom of the eighth, Jason Bartlett drew a two-out walk to bring Chase Headley to the plate. Hitting from the right side where he is batting .366, Headley drove the ball to the gap in right centerfield, tripling in Bartlett to tie the game. After walking Kyle Blanks, Rex Brothers was replaced in favor of Matt Belisle to face Jesus Guzman. Guzman singled through the 5.5 hole, to put the Padres ahead, 4-3. After a throwing error trying to pick off Kyle Blanks at third by Alfonso, both Blanks and Guzman advanced. Logan Forsythe then lifted the ball to center that was off the glove of a diving David Fowler, allowing Blanks to score , and Guzman to reach third. Forsythe hustled into second on what was ruled an error on a sacrifice fly. Gonzalez then grounded out to third before Luis Martinez knocked in Guzman, putting the Padres up three. Pinch-hitter Rob Johnson then doubled in both runners to put the Padres up 8-5. Heath Bell then came in to pitch the ninth to a standing ovation from the Petco Park crowd. He got Jonathon Herrara to ground out before striking out David Fowler. He then struck out Todd Helton to cap off the much needed victory.
