The Padres won the final game of the series for the eighth consecutive time on Sunday, avoiding the sweep at the hands of the Cincinnati Reds. The win also insured a successful 10-game road trip having one six games since beating the Dodgers in Petco Park on August 3rd.

This series saw the Reds scoring their final 19 runs off of home runs after they scored two in the first game. As a team they hit nine dingers over the series compared to the Padres two, a couple of solo shots by Nick Hundley and Kyle Blanks.

The win will make a happy flight home for the Friars after completing their longest trip of the year on a positive note. Below is a game by game recap of their series in Cincinnati.

August 12th, 2011 Reds 5, Padres 3

WP Bill Bray (3-2) 0.1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

LP Josh Spence (0-1) 1IP 1H 3R 3ER 2BB 0K 1HR

Josh Spence suffered his first career loss and second consecutive blown save when he walked two batters and then gave up a three-run homer to Jay Bruce with two outs in the eighth.

Mat Latos pitched seven strong innings again, allowing only two runs on four hits. The Padres were able to put him in line for the win when Logan Forsythe hit a grounder up the middle into center-field with runners on first and second in the eighth.

Forsythe’s eighth RBI broke a 2-2 tie.

The Padres manufactured a run on an error, a walk and fielder’s choice before Hudson singled to center to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Nick Hundley led off the second with a home run, his first at-bat since being activated of the disabled list earlier that day. Hundley also would get a single and double before being intentionally walked in the eighth, preventing him from becoming the first Padre to hit for the cycle in team history.

Jay Bruce also had an RBI double in the fourth. Drew Stubbs run-scoring single in the seventh tied the game a two-all before the Padres scored in the next half-inning.

August 13th, 2011 Reds 13, Padres 1

WP Homer Bailey (7-5) 7IP 6H 1R 1ER 1BB 7K 1HR

LP Tim Stauffer (7-9) 3IP 7H 9R 9ER 2BB 1K 5HR

Every year there is a game that seems like it was doomed from the start, when no matter what your starter throws out there, the opposition is going to tee off on him like they are taking batting practice. Saturday night was that game for Tim Stauffer and the Padres. Stauffer gave up five of the team’s seven home runs to the Reds in only three innings, in a 13-1 laugher at the Great American Ballpark.

Miguel Cairo and Ryan Hannigan had two homers, each, with home runs by Jay Bruce, Joey Votto and Todd Frazier.

The Padres only run came naturally on a solo homer by Kyle Blanks (3) in the fourth. Blanks two hits led the team and raised his average to .254. He was hitting .094 when the road trip started in Pittsburgh on August 5th.

All thirteen runs for Cincinnati were scored via the home-run, with their last three from Friday off of Bruce’s three-run shot also.

August 14th, 2011 Padres 7, Reds 3

SP Wade LeBlanc (1-2) 6IP 2H 3R 3ER 4BB 6K 1HR

LP Dontrelle Willis (0-3) 2.2IP 6H 4R 4ER 2BB 1K 0HR

The Padres took an early lead with a four run third inning that proved to be enough as they beat the Reds 7-3 on Sunday.

Wade LeBlanc earned his first win of the season allowing only two hits over six innings pitched. His only runs given up were on a three-run shot by Jay Bruce (26) in the fourth after a pair of walks to start the inning.

LeBlanc led off the third with a bloop single that landed in between the left-fielder, third baseman and shortstop. Cameron Maybin would draw a walk before flew out to center. Orlando Hudson then singled to load the bases,

With Kyle Blanks batting, Dontrelle Willis would throw a wild pitch allowing LeBlanc to score. Blanks the grounded out to third, scoring Maybin. Aaron Cunningham would then walk to put runner at the corners with two-out. Willis then gave up consecutive RBI singles to Logan Forsythe and James Darnell. He run batted in would be the first of Darnell’s short major league career. Darnell would collect another with a single in the eighth that scored Aaron Cunningham from second. Darnell then added his first stolen base of the season, earning him his “official San Diego Padre” status.

The Padres also got an RBI triple from Hudson in the seventh and a run-scoring single in the ninth by Jason Bartlett.

Heath Bell came in and closed out the game in a non-save situation in the ninth. After striking out Bruce to start the inning, Bell induced fly-ball outs by Drew Stubbs and Miguel Cairo to end the game.
