The New York Mets beat the Padres in the rubber game Wednesday night, winning a series at Petco Park for the first time since the park opened in 2004. The Mets also took the season series, winning four out of seven after splitting a four game series against the Padres in Citi Field last week. Both teams scored thirteen runs in the series, but the run scored by the Mets in the 10th inning of game one proved to be the pivotal run of the series, getting a winning run home without a hit on two, walks, a sac bunt and a fielder’s choice. The Padres will continue their current home stand with a four game series against the Marlins starting at 7:05 on Thursday night. Here is a game-by-game recap versus the Mets this week.
August 15th, 2011 Mets 5, Padres 4 (10 innings) WP Manny Acosta (1-0) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR LP Josh Spence (0-2) 0H 1R 1ER 2BB 0K 0HR S Jason Isringhausen (7) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 1BB 1K 0HR
After trailing by as much as three runs for the majority of the game, the Padres rallied back and tied it in the bottom of the eighth, only to ultimately lose to the Mets in 10 innings. Jesus Guzman’s pinch-hit single with two outs scored Orlando Hudson from second base, tying the game at four runs apiece. Hudson walked and stole second while Guzman was at the plate. Opting to pitch to the Padres hottest hitter with first base open, Guzman drove a 100 mph fastball by Bobby Parnell into right field for his 31st RBI of the season. Lucas Duda led of the second with a homerun (5) to right field that went over 400 feet of starter Aaron Harang. After striking out Jason Bay and walking Jason Pridie, Harang served up another long ball, this time to catcher Josh Thole that barely cleared the wall of the Petco porch in right field. With two out in the third, Cam Maybin singled to right field. Kyle Blanks then hit a groundball double (4) to left field, scoring Maybin from first to put the Padres down 3-1. Pridie drew a two-out walk and stole second off Harang in the fourth. Thole then brought him in again, this time on a single that pushed the lead back to three. Logan Forsythe doubled to lead off the sixth and then scored two batters later on a ball crushed by Will Venable to right field, pulling the Padres within a run of the lead. The next inning Guzman tied the game, 4-4. In the top off the 10th, Josh Spence walked the first two batters, causing Bud Black to bring in Chad Qualls. Ruben Tejada then sacrificed both runners over, putting the winning run on third. With the infield in, Scott Hairston ripped a grounder that was caught by diving shortstop Alberto Gonzalez. Though the run scored from third, Josh Thole got caught between second base and Gonzalez. Gonzalez throw back to second was very high and had to be caught by a leaping O-Dog as Thole broke for third. Hudson then landed a threw simultaneously, nailing the runner at third. Angel Pagan then grounded out to Hudson for the third out of the inning. The Padres got runners on second and third in the bottom half of the inning as well, albeit with two outs and Forsythe at the plate. Forsythe ripped a scorching grounder that was off the glove of shortstop Tejada, but Tejada recovered and threw out Forsythe by half a step to end the game, 4-3 Mets.
August 16th, 2011 Padres 6, Mets 1 WP Cory Luebke (5-6) 6IP 3H 1R 1ER 3BB 5K 0HR LP Jon Niese (11-10) 6IP 10H 3R 3ER 0BB 6K 0HR
The Padres jumped ahead in the first inning taking a two run lead, and never looked back on their way to a 6-1 lead over the Mets on Tuesday night. The Friars got back-to-back two-out, RBI singles by Orlando Hudson and Nick Hundley in the first. Aaron Cunningham knocked in their third run on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth, just after Ruben Tejada’s RBI double (8) in the top of the inning. Cameron Maybin hit a solo homer (8) to lead off the seventh and the O-Dog had another RBI single with two outs. He was caught stealing to end the inning. Alberto Gonzalez added another run with his 26th RBI in the eighth, making the score 6-1 Padres. The Padres would hang on in the ninth to even the series at a game each.
August 17th, 2011 Mets 7, Padres 3 Mat Latos gave up an early three run homer to David Wright (10) and the Mets jumped ahead to a six run lead before the Padres scored two in the ninth, losing 7-3. Latos gave up a single to Angel Pagan with one out in the third. Pagan stole second and then was safe diving back into the bag when Latos tried to nail him off base on a comebacker to the mound, resulting with runners at first and second with nobody out. The next batter Wright hit a flyball just into the stands in left-center to give the Mets a 3-0 lead. The Padres did not score a run during Latos’s six innings pitched. Each team scored a run in seventh, with the Mets coming in safely on a play at the palte on a grounder to first base Jesus Guzman doubles by Orlando Hudson (12) and Aaron Cunningham (4) to bring the score 4-1. With two outs and the bases loaded in the eighth, the Mets added three more runs with consecutive RBI singles by Pagan and Willie Harris. The Padres had a rally of their own in the ninth when Nick Hundley doubled (7) in Logan Forsythe to score the Padres second run of the game. Alberto Gonzalez then doubled (8) as well to bring up Jason Bartlett. Bartlett then struck out on a high curveball to end the game.
