The Padres finally beat the Diamondbacks at Chase Field, snapping a 16-game losing streak with a 7-6 victory on Monday. They also beat them for the first time in their Purple pinstripe uniforms they wore since Friday night, honoring their 2001 championship team.

The Padres lost their fifth straight series since splitting a two game series against the Giants when divisional play started August 23rd.

The Padres remain 21.0 games out of first with 15 remaining. Arizona does hold a seven and a half game lead over San Francisco with 15 games to play as well. Below is a game recap of the four game series in Phoenix over the weekend.

LP Cory Luebke (8-12) 5.2IP 3H 2R 2ER 4BB 9K 2HR

S J.J. Putz (38) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR

Cory Luebke struck out nine Arizona hitters while surrendering only three hits; but two of those hits were home runs to help the Diamondbacks beat the Padres 4-1 on Thursday night.

Luebke surrendered a homer (7) to Paul GoldScmidt in the fourth to fall behind 1-0. Two innings later he gave up an absolute bomb to Justin Upton (29) that put the Friars behind by two.

The Padres gave up another run in the seventh when Brad Brach induced a would-be inning-ending double-play by Aaron Hill with runners on the corners. But Orlando Hudson airmailed the relay throw, allowing the run to score and Hill to advance to second.

After walking Justin Upton intentionally to put the force back in play, new reliever Joe Thatcher surrendered a RBI single to Miguel Montero to put Arizona ahead, 4-0.

The Padres manufactured a run in the eighth inning, starting with consecutive singles by Nick Hundley and Jeremy Hermida. After outs made by the next two batters, Will Venable lined a ball the opposite way to put the Padres on the board with his 37th RBI of the season.

J.J. Putz gave up an infield single to Cam Maybin that went about five inches in front of home plate. Montero overran the ball, allowing the Padres speedster to beat out his delayed throw. After that Putz retired the next three batters, including striking out Nick Hundley swinging, to end the game on the Padres catcher’s birthday.

September 9th, 2011 Diamondbacks 6, Padres 4

WP Daniel Hudson (16-9) 9IP 5H 2R 2ER 2BB 7K 0HR

LP Chad Qualls (6-7) 1IP 2H 1R 1ER 1BB 1K 0HR

Mat Latos was electric over eight innings, only allowing two runs on eight hits over seven innings. However the Padres were only able to score two runs all game and Chad Qualls gave up a walk and two singles in the eighth to give the Arizona a 3-2 lead.

Will Venable gave the Padres a lead with a RBI line-drive single to right field, scoring Alberto Gonzalez from second base with one out in the top of the third.

Jason Bartlett doubled (21) and then andvanced on Cam Maybin’s sac bunt to start the sixth inning. Jesus Guzman the lifted a fly ball to centerfield, allowing Bartlett to tag-up and score on the sacrifice fly.

Justin Upton then cut the lead in half with a one out homer to center field. His 30th homer of the year was his second in as many games. The Diamondbacks scored again in the seventh when Gerardo Parra tripled (8) in Chris Young from second base. Young lead the inning off with his 31st two-bagger of the year to get into scoring position.

Qualls walked AaRon Hill to lead off the eighth. Miguel Montero then singled to put runners at the corners with no outs. Qualls then struck out Ryan Roberts swinging for the first out. Lyle Overbay then hit a grounder up the middle to break the tie, giving Arizona a 3-0 lead.

Daniel Hudson surrendered a double to Guzman to start the ninth. The Padres however would not bring him around to score as Hudson retired the next three Friars to earn the complete-game victory. Hudson walked only two while giving up two runs on five hits.

September 10th, 2011 Diamondbacks 6, Padres 5

WP David Hernandez (4-3) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 1BB 2K 0HR

LP Brad Bach (0-1) 0.2IP 1H 1R 1ER 2BB 1K 0HR

The Padres had lost many times over the course of this disappointing season; but their 84th and most recent loss could very well have been the worst. The Padres held a two-run lead with their All-Star closer in the game in the ninth. Heath Bell came in with two outs in eighth before Geoff Blum grounded out with a runner at third. Bell did not fare well in the ninth, blowing his fifth save by giving up back-to-back homers to Chris Young (20) and Lyle Overbay (9) to tie the game.

Things got strange in the tenth when Brad Brach walked Aaron Hill to start the inning. After a Miguel Montero single, Bud Black had Brach intentionally walked Geoff Blum to load the bases before he brought Andy Parrino in for Jeremy Hermida in right field. Hermida did not play in right though. He lined up behind second base playing as a fifth infielder with hopes of getting the runner at home. Brach struck out Chris yung swinging prompting Black to bring in Joe Thatcher to face Lyle Overbay.

Thatcher walked Overbay on four pitches, advancing Uptin home, winning the game. But Montero did not touch third base, instead opting walk from second to join his teammates celebration at home plate.

Bud Black and the rest of the Padres remained on the field until a ruling could be determined. The umpires however awarded the run to Arizona citing as baseball rule 4.09 (b) states that "the umpire shall not declare the game ended until the runner forced to advance from third base has touched home base and the batter-runner has touched first base."

Since Overbay touched first and Young touched home, the game was by definition over.

The Padres filed a protest of the game at that point. It was late repealed Sunday morning.

Highlights before that included James Darnell’s first career homer, a two run shot in the sixth. Chris Denorfia also had four hits to lead the Friars.

September 11th, 2011 Padres 7, Diamondbacks 6

WP Wade LeBlanc (3-5) 5.2IP 4H 4R 4ER 2BB 3K 1HR

LP Josh Collmenter (9-9) 4IP 6R 6ER 3BB 3K 1HR

S Heath Bell (37) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 1BB 2K 0HR

Arizona spotted San Diego seven runs before storming back, but ultimately falling short as the Padres held on to win, 7-6 on Sunday.

Heath Bell saved his 37th game of the year a day after bowing his fifth, striking out two Diamondbacks after walking the first batter he faced.

Jesus Guzman knocked in both the second and seventh Padres runs with RBI singles in the third and sixth. James Darnell also had two RBI, with a single in the second and sacrifice fly in the third. Anthony Rizzo also drew a bases loaded walk in the three-run third inning for the Padres.

Nick Hundley hit his eighth homer of the season, a two run blast left field, after Guzman walked to start the fifth.

Former Padre Henry Blanco homered (7) to start the sixth. After a couple singles and flyouts, Paul Goldschmidt walked to load the bases with two outs, chasing LeBlanc in favor of Erik Hamren.

Chris Young hammered a four seam fastball to left field, scoring Zach Duke and Gerardo Parra. Colin Cowgill then singled up the middle, scoring Goldschmidt and Young, completing a five-run inning for Arizona.

The Diamonbacks got another run when Justin Upton was safe at first grounded to third baseman James Darnell with runners at the corners. Trying to turn two Darnell’s throw was a little wide at second, causing Orlando Hudson to hold onto the ball at second instead of relaying the ball first, allowing Blanco to score from third.

The Padres would hold the one run lead for the remainder of the game, winning 7-6.
