The Padres won their first series since finishing the sweep of the Marlins on August 23rd by beating Arizona in the first two games of this weekend’s series before dropping Sunday’s game. Sunday’s loss helped the D-Back’s reduce their magic number down to five, with the Giants completing the sweep of Colorado earlier in the day.

The Padres will take their last road trip by heading to Denver to start a three game series against the Colorado Rockies on Monday. Below is a game-by-game recap of the series this past weekend.

September 16th, 2011 Padres 2, Diamondbacks 0

WP Tim Stauffer (9-12) 6.2IP 4H 0R 0ER 0BB 6K 0HR

LP Wade Miley (13-6) 6IP 5H 2R 2ER 3BB 3K 0HR

Tim Stauffer regained his early season form Friday night, pitching six and two-thirds dominating innings to lead the Padres over the Diamondbacks, 2-0. The Padres opening day starter, who has been plagued by walks and homeruns his last few starts, surrendered neither as he and three relievers combined for the shutout. It was just the fourth time Arizona had been held scoreless all season.

The Padres offense jumped on Wade Miley early before he settled down and pitched five scoreless innings after the first. Jason Bartlett had a one-out single then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch by Miley. Jesus Guzman then hit a line drive to left, scoring Bartlett and collecting his 44th RBI of the season.

Nick Hundley then hit a double (14) down the left field line that was misplayed in the corner by Gerardo Parra, allowing Guzman to score after initially stopping at third. That would be all the runs the Padres would need.

Stauffer left the game in the seventh with tightness in his right shoulder. James Darnell also left the game with an injured left shoulder, sustained after diving for a ball the same inning.

Heath Bell came in and pitched the ninth for his 38th save, striking out Miguel Montero looking to end the game.

September 17th, 2011 Padres 3, Diamondbacks 1

WP Wade LeBlanc (4-5) 6IP 4H 1R 1ER 3BB 4K 1HR

LP Josh Collmentor (9-10) 7IP 8H 3R 3ER 0BB 2K 2HR

S Heath Bell (39) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 1BB 2K 0HR

Wade LeBlanc pitched effectively for six innings and got a pair of homers to help the Padres down the Diamondbacks, 3-1 on Saturday. LeBlance gave up a home run to the second batter he faced, Aaron Hill (8), but only yielded three more hits until he exited to begin the seventh.

The Padres started a two-out rally in the second with a single by Orlando Hudson. Jeremy Hermida then was hit by a pitch, putting runners on first and second for rookie Andy Parrino. With the runners in motion, Parrino blooped a single to shallow center that fell in front of Chris Young to easily score Hudson, giving the Friars a 1-0 lead.

Hudson then added another run in the fourth with a solo shot to right field, his seventh round-tripper of the year.

Hermida added a much needed insurance run when he led off the seventh by clobbering the ball to right-center for his second homer as a Padre.

Heath Bell came into the ninth and got two quick outs before he gave up a single to Paul Goldschmidt. He then walked Young on four pitches to bring up pinch-hitter Lyle Overbay. Overbay struck out looking on a low fastball with a full count, putting Bell one save away from 40.

September 18th, 2011 Diamondbacks 5, Padres 1

WP Joe Saunders (12-12) 8.2IP 7H 1R 0ER 2BB 3K 0HR

LP Aaron Harang (7-14) 6IP 8H 2R 2ER 3BB 3K 2HR

S J.J. Putz (41) 0.1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

Mike Cameron led off the game with a single and then stole second before advancing to third when the throw went into center field. Jason Bartlett then singled him in to give the Padres a 1-0 lead.

Aaron Harang pitched three scoreless innings before giving up a game-tying solo-homer to Miguel Montero (17) to lead off the fourth. Two frames later Harang would give up another deep blast to start the inning, this time to Paul Goldschmidt (8) to Put Arizona ahead, 2-1. Harang gave up eight hits and walked three in six innings.

The D-Backs added two more in the seventh with RBI singles by AaRon Hill and Paul Goldschmidt, giving Arizona a three run advantage.

The D-Backs added another on a walk, a two-base error and a sac fly by Goldschmidt, his third RBI of the game.

Joe Saunders came within an out of a complete game until he gave up a single to Alberto Gonzalez with a man on. Gerardo Parra bobbed the ball, allowing Kyle Blanks and Gonzalez to take the extra base.

J.J. Putz then came in and struck out pinch-hitter Nick Hundley to end the game and collect his 41st save of the season.
