The Padres went into baseball’s biggest bandbox and came out with a sweep led by outstanding starting and relief pitching. The Friars held the Rockies to only three runs the whole series, something no team had ever done in series three games or more in Coors Field history.

The sweep also completed their last road trip, posting a travelling record at 36-45. They now will head home for the final six games of the year starting with a three game series with the Dodgers on Friday. Below is a recap of their record-setting trip in Denver.

September 19th, 2011 Padres 8, Rockies 2

WP Cory Luebke (6-9) 7IP 1H 2R 2ER 3BB 9K 1HR

LP Kevin Millwood (3-3) 3.1IP 9H 7R 6ER 1BB 1K 2HR

Cory Luebke dominated Colorado batters for seven innings, surrendering only two runs en route to an 8-2 win, Monday Night. Luebke gave up only one hit, a homerun to Mark Ellis (7) with two outs in the sixth after walking Eric Young a couple batters earlier. Luebke also collected a pair of hits himself on the offensive end and scored a run.

The Padres took a 1-0 lead in the second on three straight singles by Kyle Blanks, Orlando Hudson and Jeremy Hermida.

They scored two more the next inning on singles by Jason Bartlett and Kyle Blanks.

A pair of two-run homers by Aaron Cunningham (2) and Cameron Maybin (9) pushed the lead to 7-0 in the fourth. Bartlett’s sac fly pushed it to an eight run advantage until Luebke surrendered a homer the next half-inning. Ernsto Frieri pitched two hitless innings in relief to complete the one-hitter.

September 20th, 2011 Padres 2, Rockies 1

WP Mat Latos (8-14) 8.2IP 6H 1R 1ER 1BB 9K 0HR

LP Jhoulys Chacin (11-13) 6IP 6H 2R 1ER 2BB 4K 0HR

S Heath Bell (40) 0.2IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

Mat Latos came within an out of her first complete game of the season before Heath Bell got the final out to give the Padres a 2-1 win over Colorado on Friday. Latos pitched eight shutout innings before surrendering a run in the ninth, a two-out single by Jordan Pacheco that knocked in Dexter Fowler after he doubled (31) two batters earlier. Latos struck out nine Rockies and walked only one.

Orlando Hudson gave the Padres a 1-0 lead in the first inning when a two-out groundball found its way into right field, scoring Jason Bartlett from third.

Hudson also led off the sixth with a ground-rule double (14) and then scored on a double (1) from Jeremy Hermida.

Heath Bell took over for Latos with one on and two outs in the ninth. He gave up a single to Kevin Kouzmanoff before striking out Wilin Rosario for his 40th save of the year.

September 21st, 2011 Padres 4, Rockies 0

W Anthony Bass (2-0) 5IP 2H 0R 0ER 1BB 1K 0HR

LP Aaron Cook (3-10) 5IP 6H 4R 4ER 2BB 8K 0HR

S Heath Bell (41) 0.2IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR

Anthony Bass earned his second win in as many career starts as he pitched five shutout innings to help the Padres beat the Rockies 4-0, completing the sweep in Coors Field. Bass retired the first 11 batters he faced before Dexter Fowler hit a ground-rule double (32) just out of the reach of Cameron Maybin, who had earlier robbed Seth Smith of a home run with a leaping catch at the wall in the second.

The Padres jumped ahead early when Chase Headley hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Maybin in the first. The bases were reloaded after Aaron Cook walked Luis Martinez. Alberto Gonzalez then hit another fly ball, sacrificing himself to score Jeremy Hermida.

Anthony Rizzo then took Cook’s first pitch a slapped it into center to put the Padres ahead, 3-0 with a RBI single. Andy Parrino then singled himself, knocking in Luis Martinez to score the Friars fourth run of the inning.

The Padres bullpen pitched four shutout innings to end the game, including full innings by Ernesto Frieri, Luke Gregerson and Chad Qualls. Joe Thatcher gave up two hits while only getting one out in the ninth, allowing the tying run to reach the on-deck circle and give Heath Bell a chance at his 41st save. Bell struk out the next two batter to give the Friars their first sweep since beating the Marlins on August 23rd.
