Padres vs. Dbacks Series Recap

April 6, 2010   Dbacks 6 Padres 3

WP Dan Haren (1-0) 7IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 4S0, 91P

LP Jon Garland (0-1) 4IP, 5H, 6R, 2ER, 2BB, 4SO,86P

The Padres fell behind early with Evereth Cabrera making his first error of the season in the first inning, appearing not to be able to get the ball out of his glove cleanly. This was followed with a couple hits which resulted in two runs in the inning.

Two more were added by the DBacks in the third with a two run HR. The fourth inning saw two more runs for the Snakes following an error by third baseman Chase Headley who misplayed what appeared to be a foul ball that was called fair. He also threw low to first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who also seemed to think it was foul when he appeared to give up on the play. The two runs followed on a HR by S. Drew.

The Padres struck back in the seventh with Gonzalez hitting a double, followed by a single by Headley to score Gonzalez.

In the Padres ninth, with two outs, Gonzalez and Kyle Blanks hit back to back HR’s to make the score respectable.

The season opener was notable for being the opening day debuts for six Padres players (Salazar, Venable, Latos, Stauffer, Blanks, Ramos) and the Padres broadcast debut of Dick Enberg.

April 7, 2010    Padres 6 Dbacks 3

WP Chris Young (1-0) 6IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 3BB, 5SO 86P

LP Edwin Jackson (0-1) 5IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 5SO 94P

The Padres struck first in the second inning with Chase Headley and Nick Hundley reaching base on singles. Evereth Cabrera drove them both in with a double to the left field gap.

In the Padre fourth, Will Venable homered over the right field wall, landing several rows back.

The Padres tacked on two in the sixth with a single by Headley followed by a steal of second. Hundley walked and Headley advanced to third on a subsequent wild pitch by the reliever (and former Padre) Leo Rosales. Evereth Cabrera tripled on a deep drive in the gap to right center.

The seventh inning brought a rally by the Dbacks vs Padres reliever Luke Gregerson. Allowing a run on three hits, he left the bases loaded and another run scored on a ground out against Cesar Ramos. With Mike Adams pitching, another run scored on a single to the infield.

The Padres finished up the scoring with a second HR in as many nights (and in the same inning) by Adrian Gonzalez.

Evereth Cabrera had a career night with 3 for 4 at the plate, missing the cycle by a HR. He finished the night with 4 RBI, tied for his career best.

There was only one error by the Padres, the second in as many nights by second baseman Chase Headley but it didn’t contribute to the scoring.

The Go-Go Padres had their first stolen bases of the regular season. With a swiped bag by Cabrera, Gwynn and Headley.

Luke Gregerson continues his road woes with 3 hits and 3 runs against him in 1/3 innings pitched. His road ERA last season was 6.48 vs home ERA 0.65.

Chris Young had great control, throwing all of his pitches for strikes and missing bats all night long. He appeared to have good velocity with his fastball at 88mph at times.

Heath Bell collected his first save.

April 8, 2010    Dbacks 5  Padres 3

WP Ian Kennedy (1-0) 5IP, 6H, 3r, 3ER, 8SO 94P

LP Kevin Correia (0-1) 6IP, 7H, 4R, 4ER, 6SO, 108P

The Dbacks scored first with a HR to deep center by second baseman Kelly Johnson.

The Padres responded with back to back singles by Headley and Venable. Scott Hairston then homered to left field on a full count.

That would be the end of the scoring for the Padres, who struck out 10 times on the night with 4 by Kyle Blanks.

The Dbacks would score all their runs on HR’s as well. Single shots by Johnson, Chris Young and Juston Upton. A second HR by Johnson drove in three runs.

Besides Correia (3HR), Edward Mujica gave up the solo shot to Upton.

Of note for the series, Sean Gallagher had two appearances in the three games and pitched well. A total of 2IP, 1H, 1BB, 1SO with good control. Cesar Ramos was used as a situational leftie with 1 SO.

The Padres have a historically bad record at Chase Field (35-70) but do much better at home against the Snakes (59-44) with Petco giving them (32-23).

Arizona travels to Petco April 16 for a three game series.
