Padres-Braves Series Recap l
April 12th, 2010 Padres 17 Braves 2
WP- Kevin Correia 5.2IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 4BB, 3K, 109P
LP- Jair Jurrjens 3.1IP, 8H, 8R, 8ER, 2BB, 1K, 81P
The Padres came out on fire in front of a sell-out crowd for their home opener. Scoring 17 runs, the most ever in Petco Park and the most ever for a Padre home opener, many were sad to see this one end. The highlight was a 10 run 4th, that saw Jurrjens lose control of his stuff which the Padre hitters took advantage of. Will Venable capped off the scoring with a 2 run homerun blast to center. Correia was not dominating but pitched well enough to win with a double digit lead. Venable and Kyle Blanks were both one hit shy of the cycle and Blanks hit a Home run to deep left in the 5th to give him 5 RBI’s for the day.
April 14th, 2010 Padres 1 Braves 6 WP- Tommy Hanson 6IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 7K, 100P LP- Clayton Richard 5.1IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 1 BB, 5K, 90P
The day off made these two teams look completely different from the opener of the series. Tommy Hanson, Atlanta’s very talented young pitcher, held the Padres in check for most of his 6 innings, getting Kyle Blanks to ground out with the bases loaded in the 3rd for the only real Padre scoring threat. Clayton Richard looked good, cruising through 5 scoreless innings until Brian McCann’s double in the 6th that socred two, followed by a Jason Heyward single to make it 3-1 Atlanta. A Troy Glaus 3 run shot in the 7th would give the Braves more than they would need as the Padres could never mount a scoring threat.
April 15th, 2010 Padres 2 Braves 6 WP Tim Hudson 5.2IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 5BB, 0K, 100P LP Mat Latos 4.2IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K, 93P
Experience shined through for the Braves in this one in the form of Tim Hudson. Going against Mat Latos, a younger pitcher with perhaps a better arm, Hudson showed why he is one of the better pitches in the National League. Hudson was never dominate, even uncharacteristically walking 5 Padres, but got 14 ground ball outs to keep the Padres at bay. Other than a Will Venable solo shot, and a spark from Matt Stair’s pinch hit double, who would later score on a single by Everth Cabrera, the Padre offense looked lethargic. The Padres went into the 8th only down 3-2, but the Braves would score 3 off of Mike Adams who was visibly frustrated with his outing. This again gave the Braves more than they would need as their bullpen shut down the Padre hitters.
