Citi FieldThe Padres took a two game win streak and a half game divisional lead into Citi field on June 8th. They left back toSan Diego June 10th in second place one game back having lost two of three to the Mets. Here is how the three game series went down in the Queens bourrough of New York City.

June 8th, 2010 Padres 1 Mets 2

WP Edwin Mujica (2-1) 1IP 2H 1R 1ER 0BB 1K 1HR

LP Elmer Dessens (1-1) 1/3IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

Ike Davis launched a splitter thrown by Edwin Mujica into the second deck past right field for a walk-off victory for the Mets at Citi field.  The home run was the sixth given up by Mujica in his last twelve innings pitched. Davis’s blast came immediately after Scott Hairston struck out leaving a runner on second to end the top half of the inning. The Padres left a runner on second in the eighth and ninth inning also.

Mike Pelfry pitched nine innings giving up only one run but left with a no-decision.  Clayton Richard was in line for a 1-0 victory before giving up a seventh inning drive to left-center that bounced off the orange line atop the Mets outfield wall. The ball appeared to bounce back into the field of play and was thrown back in with Reyes getting into second with a stand-up double. But after the umpires reviewed the lay it was ruled a homerun after rocheting of the railing beyond the fence before returning to the field of play.

Chase Headley had two hits for the Padres and scored their lone run. He was batted in by Adrian Gonzalez, his 39th this season.  Headley is hitting .381 his last ten games with 16 hits in his last 42 at bats.  Angel Pagan and Davis Wright each had two hits for the Mets also.

June 9th was postponed due to rain. The game was rescheduled for 1:10 on June 10th.

June 10th, 2010 Padres 4 Mets 2 (Game 1)

WP Mat Latos (6-4) 6IP 2H 2R 2ER 1BB 8K 1HR

LP Johan Santana (4-3) 6.67IP 8H 4R 4ER 4BB 1K 0HR

S Heath Bell (17) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR

Mat Latos outpitched Johan Santana, at one point retiring 13 straight Mets to win the opener of a day/night doubleheader at Citi Field in Flushing, New York. Latos struck out eight Metropolitans while issuing only one walk to third baseman David Wright. Henry Blanco homered him home three batters later to give the Mets a 2-0 lead. They would not score again.

Adrian Gonzalez led the Padres with three hits on the day. His last was a go-ahead single over the glove of a leaping Alex Cora into shallow right field scoring David Eckstein from second. Eckstein also doubled in Tony Gwynn Jr. in the fifth and scored on Chase Headley’s double in the seventh inning.  Jerry Hairston Jr. sacrificed in Adrian Gonzalez in the fourth to start their scoring.

Heath Bell pitched a perfect ninth for his 17th save in 20 tries. It was only the second time he had done such this season.

June 10th, 2010 Padres 0 Mets 3 (Game 2)

WP Jonathon Niese (3-2) 9IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 6K 0HR

LP John Garland (6-4) 6IP 8H 3R 3ER 2BB 2K 0HR

Jonathon Niese was phenomenal nearly pitching a perfect game to split the doubleheader and win the series for the New York Mets with a one shutout Thursday night. With the exception of a leadoff double to Chris Denorfia in the third, Niese did not allow a Friar on base.  He retired 21 straight Padres to finish the game.

The Mets, on the other hand, racked up eight hits and three runs. They scored their first run when John Francour hit a slicing pop-out towards the line in shallow right with two runners on base.  Lance Zawadski gave everyone in Padre-land a scare when he went sliding into the legs of Adrian Gonzalez missing the ball and allowing Chris Carter to score and Rod Barajas to advance to second.  On the ensuing play Ruben Tejada grounded to Chase Headley who stepped on third and threw to Zawadzki onto Gonzalez for a “conventional” 6-4-3 triple play.

Jose Reyes went 3-4 with a run scored. David Wright and Ike Davis batted in the remaining two Mets runs respectively. Edwin Mujica pitched the seventh walking the pitcher to begin the inning. He did not surrender a home run and had a strikeout.

Pop Star Lady Gaga was seen making a gesture toward the crowd form her box seats in the first game of the double-header. Some think it signified what place the Padres were in form April 19th to June 9th. She did not attend game two which started some three June 10th, 2010 Padres 4 Mets 2 (Game 1)

hours after the end of game one.
