Rockies MascotThe Padres leave the month of June with a record of 46-32. They are fourteen games over .500 with a three game lead over the Dodgers. They went 15-12 on the month and 6-3-1 on series victories. As a Padres fan these stats are mind blowing for me to have fathomed in Spring Training. Here is how they fared against division rival Colorado June 28th through June 30th.

June 28th, 2010 Padres 6 Rockies 10

WP Ubaldo Jimenez (14-1) 6IP 4H 4R 4ER 4BB 7K 1HR

LP Kevin Correia (5-6) 5IP 7H 6R 6ER 6BB 3K 2HR

If there was ever a day to beat Ubaldo Jimenez it was this day. Unfortunately the Padres spotted the opposition eight runs before getting to Jiminez in their 10-6 loss. Jimenez won his eighth straight decision taking a no hitter into the sixth. He was supported by three two run homers and one solo by Miguel Olivo, Carlos Gonzalez, Ryan Spillbroghs and Seth Smith, respectively.

Tony Gwynn Jr. led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk. David Eckstein was able to break up the no-no with a single in the 5.5 hole past a diving Clint Barmes. Chase Headley singled in Gwynn to break up the shutout after a strikeout by Adrian Gonzalez. Scott Hairston hit a three run homer to cut the lead in half.

Hairston doubled in a run the next inning as part of two Padre scores to bring the score to 8-6. The Rockies answered back with two runs in the ninth highlighted by Seth Smith’s home run for the final score of 10-6.

June 29th, 2010 Padres 3 Rockies 6

WP Jason Hammel (6-3) 6 IP 7H 3R 3ER 1BB 4K 1HR

LP Wade LeBlanc (4-6) 6.33IP 2H 3R 3ER 3BB 8K 1HR

S Huston Street (1) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR

Clint Barmes had 4 RBI’s highlighted by a three run homer and Carlos Gonzalez hit his second home run in as many days to pace the Rockies offensive attack.

Down 4-0 in the seventh Jerry Hairston Jr. lead off the inning with a home run to left field. After singles by Everth Cabrera and Aaron Cunningham, Tony Gwynn Jr. blooped a single just fair in shallow left field to score Cabrera and move Cunningham to second.  David Eckstein sacrificed both runners to second and third base for the first out. Adrian Gonzalez then grounded out to score Cunningham and move Gwynn to third. Scott Hairston struck out to end the Padres scoring threat.

The Rockies had RBI singles by Clint Barmes and Seth Smith to go up three in the ninth and had a 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts by Huston Street. It was Street’s first save of the season.

June 30th, 2010 Padres 13 Rockies 3

WP Clayton Richard 7IP 5H 2R 2ER 1BB 10K 0HR

LP Jeff Francis (2-3) 3IP 7H 8R 8ER 3BB 0K 0HR

What do you give a man that has everything on his 53rd birthday? Well 13 runs in a day game after a night game is a good start. And the Padres delivered just that for skipper Bud Black.

Clayton Richard struck out a career-high ten batters and batted in two Friars in an outstanding performance for the young ex-quarterback of the Michigan Wolverines. He went 1-4 with his first RBI scoring the second run of a six run rally in the fourth.

The Padres scored double digits for the eighth time this season. Scott Hairston had for RBI’s on two hits. He knocked in his older brother twice including once on a bases-clearing double. Chris Denorfia scored three runs in the game on two hits and a walk.

The Padres first four runs were scored by base runners who reached base without a hit. All nine starters got a hit with all scoring but RBI leader Scott Hairston.
