It was a showdown with playoff implications in Atlanta that saw the home team come out on top winning the series two games to one. Each victory resulted in a new leader for best record in the National League. The Padres will look to rebound as their road trip will continue to Pittsburgh facing the Pirates in PNC Park on Friday. Here is how the series went down with the top teams in the NL East and NL West, respectively.
July 20th, 2010 Padres 1 Braves 4 WP- Jair Jurrjens (3-3) 7IP 5H 1R 1ER 3BB 7K 1HR LP- Wade LeBlanc (4-8) 6IP 5H 2R 2ER 4BB 5K 1HR S- Billy Wagner (22) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR
Jair Juurjens was dominant for seven innings to lead the Braves over the visiting Padres 4-1 in a battle of first place teams. Jurrjens struck out seven Padres while walking only three. Chris Denorfia hit a solo homer in the top of the second to give San Diego a one run lead. San Diego would not score again recording only five hits on the night. Atlanta took the lead in the fourth with Matt Diaz’s two run shot scoring Troy Glaus. Diaz also singled in All-Star rookie Jason Heyward to make it 4-1 in the seventh after Heyward’s RBI double. Billy Wagner pitched a perfect ninth striking out one for his 22nd save.

The Brothers Hairston highlighted a ninth inning comeback tying the game and Nick Hundley hit a go-ahead double in the 12th giving the Padres a 6-4 victory over the Braves. Scott Hairston homered with one out in the ninth to bring the Padres within one run, 3-4. Jerry Hairston Jr. followed with a single bringing Yorvit Torrealba to the plate. Yorvit doubled to rightfield with Hairston being waived home by third-base coach Glenn Hoffman. Hairston slid wide to the outside of home sneaking his left hand safely on the dish to tie the game. Nick Hundley pinch hit in the top of the 12th with two on and two out. He doubled to shallow left scoring Chris Denorfia and Oscar Salazar to give the Friars a two run lead. Heath Bell came in for his 27th save striking out all three Atlanta batters he faced.

Alex Gonzalez had four hits in five at-bats and drove in two runs to lead the Braves to an 8-0 victory Thursday. He also scored a run while raising his batting average to .370 since joining the team this month. Tim Hudson reached double digits in the win column with seven strong innings giving up only four hits. He struck out four Padres while walking only one. Jayson Heyward also had two RBI’s with two hits. Chipper Jones, Martin Prado, Matt Diaz, and Eric Hinske drove in runners also. The San Diego Padres managed just four hits on the day. Adrian Gonzalez picked up his first hit of the series a day after going 0-6 and earning the “golden sombrero” striking out four times in Wednesday’s extra-innings victory.
