The Padres were able to win their last game in Arizona to go back up by two games on San Francisco. The Friars were fortunate that the Giants dropped two of three to the Braves in Atlanta to maintain their lead in the NL West. The Padres will host the Pirate for three games starting Tuesday before heading up north for a big series against the Giants at AT&T Park on Friday. Here’s how they fared in Arizona this weekend.

August 6th, 2010 Padres 1 Diamondbacks 2

WP Daniel Hudson (2-0) 7.67IP 3H 1R 1ER 2BB 4K 1HR

LP Jon Garland (10-8) 7IP 3H 2R 2ER 6BB 4K 1HR

S Aaron Heilman (5) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

Jon Garland pitched great for seven innings yielding only two runs despite six walks. His three hit performance would normally be good enough to win but the Padres were only able to score one run in their 2-1 loss to the Diamondbacks in Chase field Friday.

The Diamondbacks took an early lead in the second when Adam Laroche hit a solo home run off Garland deep to right field.

Will Venable answered back the next half inning with a solo shot of his own. It was Will’s tenth of the season and his 39th RBI.

But the free pass proved to be Garland’s undoing. He walked back to back D-Backs with two outs in the third. Justin Upton singled in Stephen Drew for the go ahead run in the bottom of the third.

Aaron Heilman entered the game in the ninth and retired three straight Padres for hi fifth ave of the season.

August 7th, 2010 Padres 5 Diamondbacks 6

WP Aaron Heilman (3-3) 1IP 2H 2R 2ER 0BB 1K 2HR

LP Luke Gregerson (3-6) 0IP 1H 1R 1ER 0BB 0K 1HR

The Diamondbacks began the Game celebrating the career of Luis Gonzalez, retiring his number 20 in front of a sellout crowd. They sent the crowd home celebrating in the end with a walk-off victory. Chris young began and ended the game with solo homeruns giving the D-Backs a 6-5 win.

The Diamonbacks extended their one run advantage to five in the fourth inning with RBI singles by Adam LaRoche and John Hester. Rusty Ryal hit a ground rule double scoring Justin Upton right before Laroche scored on a wild pitch on an intentional walk of Stephen Drew.

The Padres got on the board when Ryan Ludwick doubled in a run after two straight singles by Miguel Tejada and Adrian Gonzalez. Chase Headley followed with another single for his 41st run batted in of 2010. Nick Hundley sacrificed in Ludwick to bring the Friars within two runs before the inning was over.

Aaron Heilman came into the ninth inning looking for his sixth save. He surrendered solo home runs to Jerry Hairston Jr. and Adrian Gonzalez to blow his fifth save this season. But Heilman was credited with his third win with Young’s walk-off dinger to start the ninth.

August 8th, 2010 Padres 10 Diamondbacks 1

WP Mat Latos (12-5) 6IP 2H 0R 0ER 4BB 6K 0HR

LP Joe Saunders (1-1) 6IP 8H 6R 5ER 1BB 2K 1HR

Mat Latos further solidified his role as stopper as the Padres again avoided a three game losing streak with a big win Sunday. Latos struck out six D-Backs and gave up only two hits for his twelfth win of the season.

The Padres jumped ahead in the second when Scott Hairston batted in Chase Headley from second base. His older brother, Jerry Hairston Jr., homered just over the left field wall with one out in the third to put them up by two. He singled in Everth Cabrera two innings later for a three run advantage.

After a Chris Denorfia base hit, Hairston Jr. scored on Adrian Gonzalez’s base knock to left. Denorfia scored on Geraldo Parra’s throwing error, advancing Adrian to third. Ryan Ludwick sacrificed home Gonzalez to make it 6-0.

Hairston Jr. would score yet again in the seventh on Gonzalez’s 71st RBI of the season. Denorfia would advance to third on the play before scoring when Ludwick grounded into a double play.

Chris Young doubled in Stephen Drew to break up the shutout in the seventh inning. The run was the first given up by Ernesto Frieri in his career, 11.67 innings over the last two seasons.

Denorfia homered in the ninth scoring Hairston Jr. Jerry scored four runs on three hits with an RBI.
