The Padres were swept for the third straight series and dropped a staggering 1o0h straight game on Sunday. The sweep by the Rockies saw the Friars free-fall from 26 games above .500 to just 16. They remain 1.5 games ahead in first place over San Francisco with the Giants playing the nightcap against Los Angeles. What started as a small slump, has turned into an offensive drought that saw opponents outscore them by 36 runs over the ten game stretch. The Padres will next face Los Angeles in this season defining homestand on Labor Day in hopes to stop this dramatic fall from grace. Here's losses eight through 10 over the start of Labor Day weekend. September 3rd, 2010 Padres 3 Rockies 4 WP Aaron Cook (5-8) 6.33IP 4H 2R 2ER 4BB 3K 0HR LP Corey Luebke (0-1) 5IP 5H 4R 4ER 3BB 3K 2HR S Huston Street (14) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR Corey Luebke surrendered a pair of two-run homers in his Major League debut giving Colorado a 4-3 victory in his first major league start. His first big league inning was eventful when he recorded his first big-league walk, pickoff, assist, and strikeout. But he began the second giving up his first triple to Melvin Mora just before serving up his first round-tripper to Jason Giambi. The bottom of the third began similarly, with a single by Carlos Gonzalez followed by a Troy Tulowitzki homer. The Padres didn’t score until the sixth when Chase Headly grounded out to first with one out after the Padres drew three walks to load the bases. Nick Hundley hit a one out, two run blast, to bring them within one at the end of seven. But the Padres could not score again the next two innings to drop their eighth straight.
September 4th, 2010 Padres 2 Rockies 6 WP Jason Hammel (10-7) 6.67Ip 6H 2R 2ER 1BB 3K 0HR LP Jon Garland (13-10) 4.33IP 7H 3R 3ER 3BB 7K 0HR Jon Garland had his shortest out since May when he was pulled with two out in the fifth after walking the bases loaded. Everth Cabrera would then misplay a grounder that would have ended the inning but instead gave Colorado a 3-1 lead that would prove to be the deciding run in their 6-2 victory. The Padres scored first in the bottom of the first with Adrian Gonzalez’s double of the very top of wall of the small box in right field. Bud Black called for a review and was rulled a double as called on the field. Colorada took their first lead in the third with Todd Helton’s two out, two-run single of Garland. Nick Hundley brought the Padres within one for the second straight day, this time with an RBI double in the seventh. But Luke Gregerson would walk two and strike out two before back-to-back RBI’s by David Fowler and Carlos Gonzalez to send the Padres to their eighth straight loss.
September 4th, 2010 Padres 2 Rockies 4 WP Jorge De La Rosa (6-4) 6IP 2H 2R 2ER 2BB 4K 1HR LP Tim Stauffer (3-3) 0.33IP 1H 2R 2ER 1BB 1K 0HR S Huston Street (15) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 3K 0HR The Padre offense sputtered again as they lost for the tenth straight time on Sunday, 4-2 to the Rockies. Troy Tulowitzki had two RBI’s early, on a solo homer and while beating out an inning ending double play to give the Rockies a 2-0 lead, through five innings played. The Padres appeared on their way to another punchless day before Miguel Tejada Homered off the Western Metal Supply Building to tie the game in the sixth and bring the San Diego crowd to life. But Tim Staufer would allow two baserunners before being pulled in favor of Mike Adams. After a double steal, both runners would score on Melvin Mora’s single giving the Rockies a two run lead that would be enough for a sweep of the first place Padres.
