The Padres were unable to get their offense going and dropped three of four against the rival Giants. The Giants came into San Diego down two games and left tied before they face the Dodgers on Tuesday in San Francisco. The Padres will fly to Colorado tonight in a huge series against the Rockies who are only one game out of first themselves. September 9th, 2010 Padres 3 Giants 7 WP Matt Cain (11-10) 8IP 5H 3R 3ER 1BB 8K 2HR LP Jon Garland (13-11) 5IP 8H 6R 6ER 3BB 2K 3HR Jon Garland had one of his roughtest outiings of the year, surrendering three home runs in a 7-3 loss Thursday night. He surrendered two-run blasts from Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey along with a solo shot from Juan Uribe. The Padres scored on a couple of long balls of their own with a solo shot by Will Venable in the third and a two run shot by Ryan Ludwick in the 9th. Pat Burell capped the Giants scoring with a solo blast in the seventh to give Cain his eleventh win of the season. Cain fanned eight friars while walking one. The win brought the Giants within a game of first place.
September 10th, 2010 Padres 0 Giants 1 Santiago Casilla (7-2) 1.33IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR Clayton Richard (12-7) 6IP 2H 1R 1ER 1BB 3K 0HR Brian Wilson (42) 1.67IP 0H 0R 0ER 1BB 2K 0HR Clayton Richard pitched good enough to win but received no run support whatsoever as the Padres fell 1-0 Friday night at Petco Park. Aubrey Huff scored when Juan Uribe beat out the backend of what would have been an inning-ending double-play. Pinch runner Nate Scheiholtz got to Davis Eckstein just enough to take a little speed off the Padres second baseman’s relay to first. Brian Wilson came in and got the save in an inning and two thirds to bring his major league leading total to 42. The Padres were unable to score in spite of drawing eight walks. They left nine runners on base. September 11th, 2010 Padres 1 Giants 0 WP Tim Stauffer (4-3) 6IP 3H 0R 0ER 2BB 5K 0HR LP Madison Bumgarner (5-5) 7IP 3H 0R 0ER 2BB 5K 0HR S Heath Bell (40) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR Yorvit Torealba ended the game with a perfect throw to second base, nailing would be base-stealer Darren Ford. The caught happened on a swinging strike three by Buster Posey to give Heath Bell his 40th save in 43 chances. Torrealba added the only run of the game with a solo homer into the small porch in right field in the bottom of the third inning. The Padres were able to extend their lead back to one ahead of the Giants with one game to go in the four game series.
September 12th, 2010 Padres 1 Giants WP Tim Lincecum (14-9) 7IP 7H 1R 1ER 1BB 9K 0HR LP Mat Latos (14-6) 4IP 7H 5R 5ER 2BB 4K 1HR
Mat Latos started the game off great. He struck out Aaron Rowand and Freddy Sanchez before getting two strikes on Aubrey Huff. But Huff worked the count for a walk, allowing Buster Posey to deposit the ball into the right field stands and give the Giants a two run lead. The Giants would add on with a sacrifice fly by Jose Guillen in the third inning. Lincecum would help his own cause when he hit a two run single in the fourth to go up 5-0. The Padres were able to get on the board when David Eckstein hit a two-out single up the middle to score Will Venable from third. Venable lead the inning off with a triple down the right field line. Brian Wilson struck out Matt Stairs looking to end the game. He came in with two and two outs in a non save opportunity. The win put the teams in a virtual tie atop the NL West.
