Padres open up the last series of this road trip by falling 1-0 in a strong pitcher’s duel. The frigid air in Wrigley chilled already cold Padres bats, despite the Padres pitchers putting up stellar performances. WP: Marmol (1-1) LP: Qualls (0-1) The Good Tim Stauffer - 7IP 4H 0R 0ER 1BB 4K 0.00 ERA 2.49 FIP Today was a great boost for Tim after having a rough couple of outings. He was able to induce ground outs to get out of some jams and eventually started to punch out batters with his breaking pitches. This was the Tim Stauffer we all know. Mike Adams & Luke Gregerson - 2 IP 0H 0R 0ER 0K 0BB 0.00 ERA 3.20 FIP (combined) The two front legs of the “G-A-B” trio live up to their name. Especially Mike Adams who has retired 27/28 of batters faced. He is having a fantastic start to this 2011 season. Jason Bartlett - 2 for 4 to raise his line to .167/.255/.167/.422 One of three Padres not to strike out this game and managed to put a dent in Zambrano’s otherwise well pitched game. His line may not be impressive, but progress is progress. The Bad Wrigley Field - The Friendly Confines, given how cold it was today, transformed into PETCO Park North Side keeping balls well within the field and numbed hands, as we saw when Orlando Hudson couldn’t turn a double play. Ryan Ludwick - 1 for 4 with 2K Many of you may think I should put him in “The Ugly” category, but despite getting 2Ks he did get a hit against a) Carlos Zambrano, in b) very unfavorable hitter conditions. And so far he has a hit two days in a row. When was the last time we remember that happening? Maybe now he turns this around. The Ugly Jorge Cantu - 0 for 3 .176/.237/.294/.531 One of the winners of the Silver Sombrero in tonight’s game. He was being fooled badly by Zambrano, swinging and missing at rising fastballs. Carlos Zambrano - 8IP 3H 0R 0ER 1BB 10K 0.00 ERA 1.08 FIP That sound you heard was Big Z beating us mercilessly with his high fastball. It made Padres hitters look real ugly. In the 2nd inning it looked like they were able to figure him out, getting a couple of hits while sending five batters to the plate. But afterwards he retired 18 batters in a row. Chad Qualls - 0.2IP 1H 1R 1ER 1BB 0K 45.00 ERA 18.2 FIP Not finishing an inning, giving up a walk, and giving up the walk-off double to Tyler Colvin makes your stats look...ugly. Doesn’t it? Quite ugly, if you ask me.
