In a game that was rained out a day earlier, Padres fall 2-1 against the Cubs in the 1st game of a double-header on Wednesday. The Padres loss was of the same mantra of stellar pitching not being supported with offense.
WP: Samardzjia (1-0)
The Good
Dustin Moseley 6.0IP 5H 1R 0ER 1BB 4K 1.40 ERA 3.91 FIP Once again Dustin pitched a marvelous game only surrendering five hits and one unearned run on a Jason Bartlett error. Once again, the Padres offense does not provide a single bit of run support to Dustin. A modicum of justice was given to young Moseley as the Padres did tie the game thus giving him a no decision and not going 0-4. If he continues pitching the way he does, he’ll be a fantastic part of the rotation.
Padres Bullpen 4H 1R 1ER 1BB 4K combined The Penitentary lives up to its name surrendering only one earned run which unfortunately happened to be in extra innings. Mike Adams continues to have a stellar start to the season and Cory Luebke had a rebound outing giving up only one walk after having a couple of rough outings in the past.
Jason Bartlett 1 for 3 with 1 RBI Jason redeemed himself by driving in a run on a sacrifice fly to tie the game in the bottom of the 9th. Also he improves his hitting to .240 by having a single at the beginning of the game. Progress is progress, after all!
The Bad
Orlando Hudson 0 for 3 with two walks O-Dog’s bat seemed to have cooled off lately, striking out all three ABs including for the final out in the bottom 9th where a hit could have given the go-ahead run for the Padres. He was able to draw two walks and get a stolen base.
The Hawpe-less
Brad Hawpe 0 for 5 with three strikeouts Brad Hawpe's performance this game was...well not very good to say the least. In fact it was downright ugly enough to merit the "Ugly" bit being renamed in his inglorious honor. Brad frustrated Padres fans (and himself as he threw his helmet down in disgust) as his performance or lack thereof dropped his AVG to a downright laughable .119. The icing on the cake was in the sixth as he grounded into a rally-killing 6-4-3 double play. In his fairness he was robbed of a bloop single by Starlin Castro's fantastic display of shortstop athleticism. Sabermetricians would say he got BABIP'd.
Matt Garza 6IP 6H 0R 0ER 3BB 9K 4.74 ERA Matt Garza started the game with a 6.27 ERA. By the end of his outing, he dropped it by nearly two runs to 4.74. He was making a mockery of Padres with his slider and sending nine Padres straight back to the dugout. Before he came out in the 6th it looked like we were finally figuring him out but he escaped certain death by inducing a double play to end the inning.
Padres "Offense" It looked like by the end of this game, the collective average of the team was going to fall below the Mendoza Line. Three times the Padres had bases loaded and not a single time was a run driven in. Padres left 16 men on the bases. All teams have bad days in the long 162 game season but this game will go down as one the Padres would like to easily forget.
