The only thing colder than the temperatures of Wrigley Field on Monday night were the Padres bats with runners in scoring position on Wednesday afternoon.

They stranded 16 Friars that afternoon losing their second extra inning game in as many scheduled dropping a 10 inning affair on Monday.

They were however able to score in the second half of the twin bill, winning 5-4 to avoid the sweep. San Diego will be heading home for a four game series against Philadelphia starting with Mat Latos vs. Roy Oswalt. Here’s a  game by game recap of the series in the Windy City.

April 18th, 2011, Cubs 1, Padres 0

WP Carlos Marmol (1-1) 1.1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR

LP Chad Qualls (0-1) .2IP 1H 1R 1ER 1BB 0K 0HR

The Padres battled in near-freezing conditions for 10 long innings but the game ended in defeat with Tyler Colvin’s walk-off double.

Colvis smoked the ball into the right field corner scoring Giovani Soto all the way from first after outfielder Chris Denorfia missed his cutoff man.

Soto reached base safely after Orlando Hudson struggled in the cold with the relay on a potential inning ending double play.

The Padres had no answer for Carlos Zambrano who allowed three hits in eight scoreless innings. Big Z struck out 10 and walked one.

Tim Stauffer bounced back from a couple rough outings with seven strong innings allowing only four hits. He struck out four while walking only one.

The Padres men left six men on base and four with two outs and a runner in scoring position.

April 20th, 2011 Game 1, Cubs 2, Padres 1

WP Jeff Zamardzija (1-0) 2IP 2H 0R 0ER 0BB 3K 3HR

LP Luke Gregerson (0-1) 1IP 2H 1R 1ER 0BB 2K 1HR

The San Diego Padres offense struggled mightily in the first of a day-night doubleheader, leaving 16 men on base while stranding eight of them in scoring position with two out.

Dustin Moseley once again pitched his heart out for six innings, giving up an unearned run and just five hits. The Padres have scored zero runs for him in 25 2/3 innings pitched this season. His 1.83 ERA has earned him an 0-3 record.

Chicago took an early lead in the third when Marlon Bird knocked in pitcher Matt Garza with a single to center.

Garza was pulled an escape act Houdini would have been proud of when he walked the bases loaded with one out before getting Brad Hawpe to ground into a double play to kill the Padres rally. Hawpe had popped up with a runner on second to end the fourth also.

The Padres loaded the bases again in the seventh, this time with two outs, before Chase Headley grounded out to third.

Closer Carlos Marmol came in for the save in the ninth but gave up a one out walk to Cam Maybin. Maybin stole second and then advance to third on a heads up bunt single by Will Venable. Jason Bartlett’s sac fly tied the game with two outs. Orlando Hudson had a chance to take the lead with a base hit but struck out to end the inning.

The 10th inning the Padres had Ludwick and Headley at second and third with one out. But Brad Hawpe struck out swinging before pinch hitter Alberto Gonzalez lined out to end the 10th.

Once again the Padres had a chance in the 11th loading the bases with one out and Headley up. But Chase popped up to shallow left field, preventing the runner to score from third. Nick Hundley then flied out to center ending another opportunity to take the lead.

Pinch hitter Reed Johnson then ended the game with a walk off homer, dropping the Padres to three games below .500.

April 20th, 2011 Game 2, Padres 5, Cubs 4

WP Aaron Harang (4-0) 6.0IP 9H 2R 2ER 0BB 5K 0HR

LP James Russel (1-2) 4IP 7H 4R 4ER 1BB 0K 3HR

S Heath Bell (5) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

The Padres quickly put their offensive struggles behind them, scoring early and often and needing every run as they squeezed out a 5-4 win over the Cubs to avoid both a doubleheader and series sweep.

Ryan Ludwick homered in the second to put the Pads up 2-0. He went three for four raising his average up to .200.

Cameron Maybin and Chris Denorfia each hit solo homers, in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Dernorfia had three hits on the day.

The Padres gave up two runs in the fifth highlighted by Reed Johnson’s RBI double. Johnson had three hits after his game winning shot hours earlier.

Alfonso Soriano hit a two run homer in the eighth bringing the Cubs within one.

But Bud Black brought in closer Heath Bell for the ninth. He surrendered a two hit but struck out Darwin Barney for the his fifth save of the year.
