The Padres offense was dominated by Philadelphia’s pitching for most of the four game series, getting swept at Petco Park in four games.

The Phillies nearly shut them out three time in the four games, coming one out away on Sunday before Will Venable singled in a run. The Padres only held leads in the third game twice before ultimately losing in 11 innings. They scored just five runs in four games.

The Friars look to rebound as they have three games at home against the Braves starting on Monday. Dustin Mosely will take the hill on Monday with a 0-3 record despite a 1.40 ERA. San Diego has yet to score a run for him in four starts. He will face Derek Lowe (2-3) at 7:05pm.

The San Diego Padres offense was once again missing in action as the Philadelphia Phillies beat them 3-0 on Thursday night.

Mat Latos gave up a couple solo homers in the second to give Philadelphia a two run advantage.  He also surrendered an earned run on Chris Denorfia’s fielding error when the scorekeeper surprisingly assumed a sacrifice fly.

Latos lost his eighth straight start dating back to 2010 since setting an MLB record for giving up two runs or less for 15 straight games. But even if Latos pitched a shutout he still would not have snapped streak.

The Padres offense struck out 10 times and left 9 runners on base. Jorge Cantu’s struggles continued going 0-4 with a strikeout, lowering his average to .152. Orlando Hudson, Chase Headley, and Ryan Ludwick also went hitless.

The Padres threatened in the ninth when Cameron Maybin doubled with two outs. Will Venable then walked to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Brad Hawpe. Hawpe struck out looking to end the game and lower his average to .116.

Cole Hamels beat his hometown team, dominating for seven innings as Philadelphia won 2-0 on Friday night. The Phillies handed San Diego its second straight shutout and third in five games. The Padres have failed to score for 21 straight innings, last in the sixth of Wednesday’s win in Chicago.

Clayton Richard pitched very well for over seven innings but was unable to get any run support as he lost his first start of the season.

He had a chance to help himself when he had the bases loaded the second with two outs. But Clayton’s broken bat blooper was chased down by Jimmy Rollins to end the inning. The Padres had runners at second and third with one out that inning and failed to score.

The Phillies took the lead in the second when Ryan Howard tripled to the wall in right center with two runners on and two out.  That would be all they needed as the Padres did not put up much of a fight after that.

LP Chad Qualls (0-2) 1.2IP 1H 2R 2ER 1BB 1K 0HR

S Ryan Madson (2) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR

Ryan Howard had already earned the Golden Sombrero, having struck out in his previous four at bats, before Bud Black intentionally walked Jimmy Rollins to face him in the bottom of the 11th with two outs.

Howard responded launching a deep opposite field hit tailing towards the fouline that bounced of Ryan Ludwick’s glove, scoring two and giving the Phils a two run lead that held on to beat the Padres 4-2.

The Padres snapped their 21 inning scoreless streak to start the game when leadoff hitter Cam Maybin singled and then scored on Jason Bartlett’s triple to start the first. It was Bartlett’s first extra-base hit of the season.

The Phillies answered back with a triple of their own when Ben Francisco drove in Jimmy Rollins in the fourth.

Maybin scored again in the fifth on Nick Hundley’s double to left to put the Padres up 2-1.

The Phillies tied the game when Pete Orr scored from second on Jimmy Rollins single in the sixth. Orr reached second on a controversial double just on the right field line in which Umpire Mike DiMuro hesitated momentarily before calling fair.

Brad Hawpe’s frustrations continued as he launched the ball to the near identical spot as Howard’s at the wall in left field, but was caught to end the game with a runner on. Hawpe went 0-4, dropping his average to .104.

April 24th, 2011 Phillies 3, Padres 1

WP Roy Halladay (3-1) 8.2IP 5H 1R 1ER 1BB 14K 0HR

LP Wade LeBlanc (0-1) 8IP 9H 3R 3ER 4BB 2K 1HR

S Antonio Bastardo (1) 0.1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR

Roy Halladay flat out dominated the Padres, taking a two-hit shutout into the ninth inning, fanning 14 Friars along the way. He walked only one and gave up five hits.

The Padres were able to collect three singles off Halliday in the ninth, the last one by Will Venable scoring Jason Bartlett to put the Padres on the board and force Charlie Manuel to bring in Antonio Bastardo to face Brad Hawpe.

Bud Black did not allow Hawpe a chance to be the last out as he brought in Nick Hundley who flied out to right to complete the sweep. It was the only time in the game the punchless Padres left a man in scoring position with two out.

The Phillies scored a couple in the sixth inning when Ben Francisco singled in Jimmy Rollins and John Mayberry doubled in Ryan Howard on a ball off the glove of a diving Ryan Ludwick.

"The Flyin' Hawaiian" Shane Victorino added another run in the seventh with an in-the-park homerun.

Wade LeBlanc was called up from Triple A Tuscon gave the Padres everything they needed short a win. His eight innings pitched gave the Padres bullpen a much needed rest while taking the hill, ensuring that Dustin Moseley gets five days rest after starting the first game of the double-header in Chicago last Wednesday.
