All the excitement the Padres generated with a huge extra-inning victory Monday night was quickly extinguished when the Braves won big the next two games, culminating with the Friars' seventh shutout loss in 23 games. The Friars will have an off day Thursday after playing 20 games in as many days before travelling up I-5 to face the Dodgers Friday night. Here is how the series against the Braves unfolded.
April 25th, 2011, Padres 5, Braves 3 WP Cory Luebke (1-1) 2IP 3H 0R 0ER 0BB 2K 0HR LP Christhian Martinez (0-2) 2.1IP 1H 2R 2ER 1BB 0K 1HR Ryan Ludwick broke out of his slump in a big way with two homers, including a walk-off in the 13th to pace the Padres to a 5-3 win. Ludwick finished with three RBI’s and raised his average to .195. Chris Denorfia kept the game tied in the top half of the inning with the Padres defensive play of the season thus far. With one out he chased a batted ball to the right field line and caught the ball diving forward before rolling over the bullpen mound before leaping up and doubling up the shocked runner retreating back to first. The play ended a Braves threat keeping it tied, 3-3. Dustin Mosely got his second straight no-decision but actually got some run support with Will Venable’s fielder’s choice followed in the second and Ludwick’s first home run in the third. Mosely lost the lead in the fifth when he gave up a couple RBI singles which added on to the Jayson Heyward’s homer in the first. Nick Hundley launched a RBI double off the fence, tying the game in the eighth and forcing extra innings.
April 26th, 2011 Braves 8, Padres 2 WP Jair Jurjens (2-0) 9IP 9H 2R 2ER 2BB 4K 0HR LP Aaron Harang (4-1) 6IP 7H 8R 8ER 3BB 2K 3HR Aaron Harang suffered his first bad outing as a Friar getting tattooed by the Braves Tuesday night for his first loss of the season. He surrendered eight runs, all earned, in six innings. The Braves hit three home runs, including two from catcher David Ross. Ross’s three-run shot in the fifth blew the game open to an 8-1 lead. Orlando Hudson highlighted the Padres offense with an RBI triple in the fourth. Ryan Ludwick went two for four with a pair of doubles, raising his average to .209
April 27th, 2011 Braves 7, Padres 0 WP Tommy Hanson (3-3) 7IP 4H 0R 0ER 1BB 4K 0HR LP Mat Latos (0-4) 5IP 7H 6R 1ER 1BB 5K 0HR Mat Latos took the mound Wednesday afternoon looking for his first win of the season but came up empty handed again as the Padres lost 7-0. It was the seventh shutout loss by the Padres this year. Latos gave up a run in the first when Martin Prado doubled and later scored on Chipper Jones’s groundout to short. Chipper’s RBI moved him ahead of Mickey Mantle to take over second place all-time for switch hitters with 1,510. The Braves blew it open in second when Brad Hawpe misplayed a grounder with two outs’ allowing two runs. Jayson Heyward then beat out an infield single before Jones tripled in Prado and Heyward. Brian McCann then doubled in Jones to put the Braves up 6-0. The Braves added on another run in the ninth with Heyward’s RBI single.
