Sharing is Caring

The San Diego Padres took two of three games from Arizona to win just their third series of the season. The series saw a dramatic walk-off walk to win game one followed by a both increasingly frequent and frustrating shutout loss. The final game brought the Padres first three-run homer of the year and plenty of fantastic defensive play in the outfield.

The series also had the first Major league starts for catcher Kyle Phillips and second baseman Logan Forsythe,  both still seeking their first hit as the Padres head to Milwaukee to start a three-game series at Miller Park Monday night.

Below is a game by game recap of the Padres’ weekend series at Petco Park, hosting the Diamondbacks of Arizona.

May 6th, 2011, Padres 4, Diamondbacks 3

WP Chad Qualls (1-2) 2IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR

LP Sam Demel (1-2) 1IP 2H 1R 1ER 1BB 0K HR

Chase Headley drew a game-winning, bases loaded walk to give the Padres a 4-3 win in 11 innings Friday night. The game went into extra innings after the Diamondbacks scored two runs on Chase’s throwing error to first that Brad Hawpe was unable to scoop with two outs in the ninth.

The error prevented Heath Bell from separating himself from Trevor Hoffman as the club holder for consecutive saves. Both have 41, tied with Rod Beck for fourth all-time in MLB history.

The Padres got a great effort out of Tim Stauffer who was still looking for his first win. He pitched 6.2 shutout innings with six strikeouts, allowing only four hits and a walk. His safety squeeze in the third gave the Padres a one run lead. Rob Johnson, who advanced to third on an error that same play, scored on Will Venable’s sacrifice fly the next at-bat.

Venable added another run in the fifth with an RBI double. He finished 3-5 with a pair of two-baggers and a run scored.

Heath Bell walked the first two batters of the ninth inning before surrendering an run-scoring double to Gerald Parra to leave runners at second and third with no outs. He struck out the next two batters before inducing a hard grounder to Headey that he short-hopped to Hawpe for the error and blown save.

May 7th, 2011 Diamondbacks 6, Padres 0

WP Daniel Hudson (3-4) 7IP 5H 0R 0ER 0BB 6K 0HR

LP Dustin Moseley (1-4) 5IP 7H 6R 6ER 3BB 3K 1HR

Dustin Moseley’s had his first bad outing of the season as the Diamondbacks lit him up for six runs, including a two run homer by Justin Upton, losing 6-0 on Saturday night.

Arizona jumped ahead 1-0 in the first when Brian Roberts scored on Eric Patterson’s fielding error after advancing to third on Stephen Drew’s single.

Drew singled again with the two men on to give the D-Backs a two run lead in the third. After another RBI single by Melvin More, Drew scored on Miranda’s fielder’s choice to make it 4-0 on Arizona.

The Padres had no answer for Daniel Hudson who dominated Padres hitters for seven shutout innings. He fanned six Friars while walking none. The shutout loss was the Padres eighth of the season, worst in the big leagues. Bud Black was presented with the National League Manager of the Year award prior to the game which was also Bud Black bobblehead night.

May 8th, 2011 Padres 4, Diamondbacks 2

WP Aaron Harang (5-2) 7IP 8H 2R 2ER 1BB 2K 0HR

LP Joe Saunders (0-4) 6IP 5H 4R 4ER 3BB 3K 1HR

S Heath Bell (8) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 1BB 1K 0HR

A day after getting shutout the Padres offense jumped ahead early, scoring four runs in the first inning and holding on to win 4-2 over the Diamondbacks.

Aaron Harang snapped a two game skid to earn his fifth victory of the year.  His only blip was giving up two runs in the second on three hits, including a Josh Wilson double.

Chris Denorfia singled and then stole second to lead off the bottom of the first. He scored on Jason Bartlett’s double to put the Padres up 1-0. Chase Headley drew a walk after Ryan Ludwick’s groundout to bring up Jorge Cantu. Cantu deposited a high slider over the wall in left-center for a three-run homerun. It was the Padres’ first three-run homerun of the season and Cantu’s fourth homer.Cantu went 2-4, raising his average to .200.

Mike Adams was not as sharp as usual when he gave up consecutive hits to Justin Upton and Mike Montero with one out. Xavier Nady then launched a ball to deep centerfield where Cameron Maybin made an amazing lunging grab on the warning path, possibly saving the game. Upton was able to tag and score but Montero was forced to retreat back to first. Miguel Mora then struck out swinging to end the inning.

Heath Bell then came in and induced a ground ball to first by Gerald Parra and covered the bag on a nice play by Cantu for the putout. Maybin made another fantastic play on a low line drive in front of him in centerfield. He was able to make a diving grab, securing the ball after hitting the ground. Bell then walked Russell Branyan before striking out Chris Young looking, to end the game and win the series for San Diego.
