The Padres lost their first two games of the series with the tying run on base and were faced with a one-run deficit in game three. But on Wednesday thy corrected that problem with an eight run eighth to win 13-6. The Padres head to Colorado on their best offensive run of 2011, scoring 19 runs in their last 13 innings. Here is a game by game recap of how the Padres bats came alive in Milwaukee.
May 9th, 2011 Brewers 4, Padres 3 WP Zack Grienke (1-1) 6IP 5H 2R 2ER 0BB 9K 0HR LP Mat Latos (0-5) 5.2IP 7H 4R 4ER 2BB 4K 1HR S John Axford (6) 1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR The Brewers beat the Padres Monday night using all phases of the game. Milwaukee utilized timely hitting, effective pitching, and spectacular defense.
They jumped ahead in the first on Mat Latos with a one out triple by Carlos Gomez. After a Ryan Braun walk, Latos got Prince Fielder to popup for the second out. Latos then bounced a two strike curveball in the dirt that got away from catcher Rob Johnson and scored Gomez from third. Another walk and wild pitch later, Latos was able to escape with minimal damage, striking out Yuniesky Bentacourt looking to end the Brewer threat.
Rickie had an RBI single in the second and homered in the sixth to lead Miluakee’s offensive attack.
Zack Grienke pitched well in his Miller Park debut, holding the Padres to just two runs in six innings. He allowed a RBI double from Chase Headley in the fourth and a runscoring single by Jason Bartlett in the sixth.
Bartlett was 2-4 with an RBI. He had a chance to do some damage in the eighth with runners on first and third with no outs and the Padres down 4-2. Bartlett hit a groundball that bounced high off the mound and was fielded by shortstop Bentacourt deep behind second base. He threw a behind the back pass with his glove hand to second that was caught barehanded by Weeks and thrown to first to complete the spectacular double-play. Chris Denorfia did score from third but the Padres lost all base runners on the play and were not able to score again.
May 10th, 2011 Brewers 8, Padres 6 WP Shaun Marcum (4-1) 6IP 9H 5R 5ER 0BB 8K 0HR LP Clayton Richard (1-4) 3.1IP 10H 8R 7ER 1BB 1K 0HR S (7) 1IP 2H 1R 0R 0BB 2K 0HR
Clayton Richards struggles continued, surrendering eight runs to the Brewers in just three and a third innings. The Padres lead a furious comeback that just fell short as they lost 8-6 Tuesday night in Milwaukee.
Jonathon Lucroy went 3-4 and had three RBIs. His single in the third put Milwaukee up 3-0 and he also scored the eighth run for the Brewers after his RBI double in the fourth.
The Padres came back starting in the sixth with Jason Bartlett knocking in Kyle Phillips. Phillips was also instrumental in the four run eighth when he scored on a wild pitch after knocking in two with a bases loaded single. The Padres hit five straight singles to start the inning and Chase Marcum from the game. The Friars were able to get the go-ahead run up to bat in the ninth. Will Venable’s two out single scored Alberto Gonzalez to put San Diego down two. Jason Bartlett then singled, advancing Venable to third and bringing left-fielder Ryan Ludwick to bat. Ludwick grounded out to second, ending the game and handing San Diego their second straight loss.
May 11th, 2011 Padres 13, Brewers 6 WP Chad Qualls (2-2) 1.1IP 1H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR LP KameRon Lowe (2-4) 0.1IP 3H 4R 4ER 1BB 0K 0HR
The Padres were in dire straits. After falling short two runs from their comeback the night before, they took a 5-0 lead in the third only to give up six unanswered runs by the end of the sixth. But this time they were able to answer in the top half of the eighth inning.
The Padres’ offense exploded for eight runs in the inning highlighted by Cameron Maybin’s go ahead, bases clearing double. Ryan Ludwick then walloped his fith homer of the season to put the game out of reach. Brad Hawpe and Jason Bartlett then had RBI singles to finish the scoring.
The Padres, who are last or near the bottom in nearly every offensive category, hit a MLB season high 23 hits. Maybin and Bartlett had four hits each and four RBIs combined. Chris Denorfia hit a leadoff homerun to start the game. The shot to deep left center put him 79 behind career leader Rickey Henderson, with 80. Denorfia and Ludwick had three hits apiece as well.
Yuniesky Betancourt gave the Brewers their first lead, hitting a solo homer in the sixth. Prince Fielder homered earlier that inning.
The win prevented the Brewers from sweeping the Padres and brought the back to .500 on the road (8-8).
