The Padres hot hitting from Milwaukee carried over to their series in Colorado, averaging eight runs a game in the mile high city. Even though they put up seven runs in the first game, they still lost by five. They did however come back with two straight wins, including scoring eight unanswered runs to win on Saturday and blowing the game open on Sunday with a five run seventh inning. The next stop on this road trip is hitter friendly Chase Field, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Padres will play three games there before heading back to San Diego. Below is a game by game recap of how the Padres handled the Rockies this weekend in Denver.
May 13th, 2011 Rockies 12, Padres 7 WP Jorge de la Rosa (5-1) 5.2IP 9H 5R 5ER 3BB 3K 1HR LP Dustin Moseley (1-5) 4IP 9H 6R 6ER 2BB 3K 1HR The Padres offense continued its outstanding production but came up short, losing 12-7 to the Rockies. Cameron Maybin went deep twice, knocking in three runs. He scored three runs himself, collecting four hits on the day. Ryan Ludwick also contributed two hits and a RBI single. Dustin Moseley had another rough outing surrendering six runs in four innings. The Colorado offense had its season high in hits (16) and runs (12). Troy Tulowitzki hit a solo homerun in the fourth. He finished with three hits and three runs batted in. Ryan Spilborghs also collected three hits and Todd Helton had two. The Padres kept it close for most of the game until Colorado scored three runs in the eighth to go up five, the last run coming in on a balk by Ernesto Frieri.
May 14th, 2011 Padres 9, Rockies 7 WP Mike Adams (2-0) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 1K 0HR LP Huston Street (0-1) 1IP 2H 2R 2ER 0BB 0K 1HR S Heath Bell (9) 1IP 0H 0R 0ER 0BB 0K 0HR
If we could look back to a signature or defining moment of when Brad Hawpe broke out of his career-threatening slump, his last at-bat with two out in the eighth Saturday night would be it. Hawpe belted a ball in the second deck in right field with a runner on to give the Padres a two run lead and complete their improbable comeback. Kyle Phillips’s RBI single in the second gave San Diego a 1-0 lead. But they would surrender seven unanswered runs, apparently headed for a second straight loss. Aaron Harang gave up all seven runs the next three innings. He surrendered four in the third, highlighted by Todd Helton’s fifth homer of the season. Carlos Gonzalez also homered in the fourth, his fifth of the year. The Rockies added two more in the sixth including Chris Iannetta’s sac fly, pushing Colorado ahead, 7-1. The Padres loaded the bases in the seventh and then pushed two runners across the plate on pitcher Jhoulys Chacin’s fielding error and throwing error of the bat of Eric Patterson. Chris Denorfia then hit an RBI single moving Patterson to third base. Jason Bartlett then hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Patterson. The Padres got Harang off the hook for a loss when they tied the game in the eighth. Ryan Ludwick hit a sacrifice fly cutting the deficit to one. Eric Patterson’s single to center scored Cameron Maybin to tie the game. Will Venable doubled off of closer Huston Street to lead off the ninth.Venable advanced to third on Jason Bartlett’s sacrifice bunt, giving the Padres a great chance to score with a runner on third with only one out. But Venable was thrown out at home by third baseman Ty Wiggington after he broke for home on Jorge Cantu’s grounder. Venable appeared to have beaten the high throw but was expertly blocked from the plate by catcher Ianetta. It looked like another squandered scoring opportunity by the Padres until Hawpe saved the day with his second and most important home run as a Padre.
May 15th, 2011 Padres 8, Rockies 2 WP Mat Latos (1-5) 5.2IP 4H 2R 1ER 3BB 5K 1HR LP Jason Hammel(3-3) 6.1IP 6H 6R 6ER 3BB 5K 1HR
Mat Latos won his first game since September 7, 2010, snapping his streak of losing decisions at 10 with the Padres 8-2 win on Sunday. Latos gave up a run in the first when he got Troy Tulowitzki to ground into a would-be inning-ending double play. But Eric Patterson’s relay throw bounced past Brad Hawpe allowing Seth Smith to score from second for a 1-0 Rockies lead. Ryan Ludwick gave San Diego the lead for good with a three-run homer in the fourth. Ludwicks towering shot to left was his sixth rund-tripper of the year and brought his RBI total to 23. Latos gave up a solo homer to Todd Helton, giving him one in back to back games. It was the only earned run given up by Latos to go along with five strikeouts and only three walks. The Padres broke it open in the seventh with five more runs. With one out, they recorded three consecutive singles followed by two doubles. Brad Hawpe singled in Jason Bartlett to put them up six to finish the scoring.
