The Padres offensive outburst that began in Milwaukee and continued through Denver and on to Phoenix came to a screeching halt in the final game of their road trip, with a 6-1 loss to Arizona. During the trip they tied the team record of five consecutive games of scoring seven runs or more, only done twice before (4/18/79-4/22/79, 4/3/96- 4/8/96). The split in Arizona dropped them to 4-4 on the road trip. But the trip featured the first win of the season by Mat Latos, along with Clayton Richard’s first win since his first start on April 2nd. The Padres will host Milwaukee for two games before a three game interleague series with Seattle to finish out the week. Here are the gameday recaps of the series split at Chase Field.

The Padres kept their foot on the pedal as they rolled into Chase field piling on the runs in an 8-4 victory over the Diamondbacks on Monday night. Jason Bartlett singled in his first at-bat to extend his hit streak to eight games. Chase Headley followed with a double. After a Brad Hawpe walk, Cameron Maybin singled in Bartlett for a 1-0 lead. Headley then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Ludwick. The Padres added three more runs in the second starting with Bartlett’s two run double. The hit tied Bartlett for second all-time in team history for consecutive games with an RBI (8). Bartlett would score from second in the next at-bat when Chase Headley singled to shallow center to put the Padres ahead, 5-0. Clayton Richard pitched the same amount of innings as his last start (5.2) but with a much different result. He surrendered only three runs, two off solo homers by catcher Henry Blanco in the third and fifth innings. The Padres scored three in the top of the fifth with starting with a sacrifice fly by Maybin, scoring Headley from third. Headley reached base four times with three hits and a walk. Ryan Ludwick hit his seventh homer later that inning with a runner on. His three RBIs gave him 26 on the season, ninth in the National League. Justin Upton homered off Ernesto Frieri to lead off the eighth to make it 8-4. Frieri then walked, struck out, and then hit a batter to put the tying run on deck and force Bud Black to bring in Mike Adams. Adams retired the next two batters to finish the inning and allowed just one hit in the ninth to earn his first save of 2011 and second of his career.

The Padres jumped to an early 1-0 lead and looked they were on their way to another high scoring game. But after a controversial call that took a run off the board they were unable to score again, losing 6-1 to Arizona. Chris Denorfia began the game launching the ball 10 plus feet up the centerfield wall. Jason Bartlett then hit tied the team record with a RBI in nine consecutive games when he launched the ball to the wall in left that was spectacularly caught by Gerardo Parra. Kelly Johnson led off the first for the Diamondbacks with a double and then was sacrificed over to third by Ryan Roberts. Johnsson then scored on a hard hit grounder to shortstop Jason Bartlett, who’s threw to first for the sure out. Eric Patterson tripled to lead off the bottom of the second as did Denorfia the inning before. Rob Johnson then lifted the ball to right field and Patterson beat the throw home for a 2-1 lead. But Arizona pitcher Daniel Hudson tossed the ball to third base and Umpire Joe West signaled an out, ruling Patterson left third before the ball was caught for an unconventional 9-2-1-5 double play. Manager Bud Black argued upon deaf ears as West did not budge even though replay clearly showed Patterson had not only waited for the catch, but that West was not even looking at his feet. Miguel Montero doubled in the fourth, giving the D-Backs a 2-1 lead. Montero also scored their fourth run right behind Chris Young, when Parra singled to center with the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Stephen Drew and Montero both added RBI singles in the seventh to put Arizona up 6-1.
