IMGP2605Orlando Hudson returned to the starting lineup for the first time in fifteen days pn Thursday night and delivered a game winning sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth for a dramatic 1-0 win. The win prevented Milwaukee from sweeping the short two game series prior to the the Friars first foray into interleague play this weekend.

The win was only the eight by the Padres at Petco Park this year and 19th overall. The Padres (19-25) will face Seattle (19-24) the next three games in a NL-AL showdown in San Diego. Here is how the quick series against the Brew Crew unfolded.

Former Padres centerfielder Mark Kotsay went had three hits and two RBIs, helping the Brewers beat San Diego 5-2. Kotsay had an RBI single to give Milwaukee a 1-0 in the top of the fourth.

The Padres answered back in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff single by the hot-hitting Brad Hawpe. Ryan Ludwick then deposited the ball into the left field stands and sprinted around the bases to give the Padres a 2-1 lead.

Dustin Moseley pitched well for five innings but got into a bit of trouble in the sixth. With one out he surrendered a double to Prince Fielder and then walked his first batter of the game. Kotsay then launched a ball to deep right field that got by a retreating Chris Denorfia, who crashed into the wall allowing the tying run to score.

Bud Black had Mosely intentionally walk Yuniesky Benticourt to load the bases before bringing in Ernesto Frieri.On his first pitch Big Ern hit Jonathon Lucroy to bring in the go ahead run for Miluakee before striking out the next two to end the inning.

The Brewers added two more runs in the seventh with a run scoring double by Ryan Braun before he scored himself on Fielder’s single.

The Padres got the tying run to the plate in the ninth after consecutive singles by Chris Denorfia and Jason Bartlett. But back to back strikeouts by Chase Headley and Brad Hawpe ended the game for San Diego.

Orlando Hudson hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in his first game back from the disabled list, giving the Padres a dramatic 1-0 win on Thursday night. The crowd that came out to the park for “Single’s Night” and SDSU night were treated to the O-Dog’s second game winner of the year, last time a single to left the bases loaded to beat the Reds on April 14th.

Aztec Alumni Aaron Harang pitched fantastically for eight innings, giving up no runs on six hits while walking only two. He pitched out of a jam in the first with runners on second and third with one out when he induced a pop up buy Prince Fielder followed by a groundout by Casey McGehee.

Chris Narveson was equally impressive pitching 7.1 innings of shutout ball with four strikeouts.

The Padres had a good chance to take the lead in the seventh when Cameron Maybin singled and then stole second after a Chase Headley flyout. Maybin then advanced to third on Hudson’s flyout to center to put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. But McGehee snagged a hard hit grounder by Rob Johnson and made a nice htrow to first to end the inning.

Ryan Ludwick started the ninth inning rally with a single to right center. Pinch runner Eric Patterson then stole second base to put the wiining run in scoring position. Brad Hawpe then was intentionally walked to put the force out back in play and bring Maybin to the plate. Maybin then laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, moving the runners to second and third with one out. Headley was intentionally walked to load the bases, giving Hudson a chance to win the game.
