The Padres' offensive funk at Petco Park continued as they were shut down by Seattle pitching, losing all three games of the weekend series. The Padres scored only two runs the entire series and struck out 35 times. They had only fourteen hits in the three games. The Padres were swept for the second time this season and dropped to 10 games below .500. Tommorow they will host the red-hot St. Louis Cardinals for three games before flying to the nation’s capital on Thursday for a three game series against Nationals starting Friday.
May 20th, 2011 Mariners 4, Padres 1 WP Erik Bedard (2-4) 8IP 3H 0R 0ER 2BB 9K 0HR LP Mat Latos (1-6) 6IP 8H 4R 4ER 1BB 4K 1HR
The Padres fell to the Mariners 4-1 Friday night in front of 26,501 fans at Petco Park. The loss dropped them to 8-16 at home. Erik Bedard tied his career high with strikeouts with nine, when he struck out as many White Sox batters in just his last start on May 8th. San Diego’s baserunning was not very stellar as was apparent on two plays. With the Padres down 4-0 and a runner on first Jorge Cantu lifted a ball deep to left field. Left fielder Carlos Piguero use all 6’5” of his body when he leaped over the wall to take away a homerun that would have cut the lead in half. He then threw the ball into the cutoff man, who doubled up the shocked Ryan Ludwick before he could get back to first base. Ludwick was involved in another bizarre baserunning play with his RBI single to left in the bottom of the ninth. Jason Bartlett thought the ball was caught and was running back to second when he collided with Ludwick trying for a double. The Mariners then appeared to force out Bartlett at second before he could make it there. The umpires met and amazingly awarded Bartlett second base and called Ludwick out even though Bartlett never made it to second and the baserunners never crossed paths. Mat Latos was unable to string a couple of wins together when he surrendered four runs. Piguero had an RBI triple in the second and then scored on Brendan Ryan’s single to put Seattle up 2-0. Ryan scored Miguel Olivo on a sac fly in the fourth. Olivo then hit a 415’ solo shot off Latos in the sixth inning to put the Mariners up 4-0.
May 21st, 2011 Mariners 4, Padres 0 WP Michael Pineda (6-2) 7IP 2H 0R 0ER 1BB 9K 0HR LP Clayton Richard (2-5) 5IP 7H 3R 3ER 1BB 2K 0HR
Clayton Richard had a 1-2-3 first inning but then ran into a little trouble, giving up three of the six runs scored by Seattle. The Padres suffered their ninth shutout loss, most in the majors. The Mariners scored two in the second when Mike Wilson singled with two on to score a run. Jack Wilson followed with a sacrifice fly. Richard hit Brendan Ryan with a pitch with one out in the fourth before Mike Wilson got his second RBI of the day with a double to deep right center. Jack Wilson later scored on Catcher Kyle Phillips pickoff throw in the sixth to complete the scoring. Orlando Hudson had the only extra base hit for the Padres when he doubled in the second. The Padres had only three other hits with singles by Chase Headey, Ryan Ludwick, and Eric Patterson.
May 22nd, 2011 Mariners 6, Padres 1 WP Felix Hernandez (5-4) 8IP 6H 1R 1ER 0BB 13K 0HR LP Tim Stauffer (0-3) 6IP 10H 3R 3ER 1BB 3K 0HR
Felix Hernandez showed why he is the reigning Cy Young award winner in the American eague as he shut down the San Diego lineup with 13 punch-outs, while walking none. King Felix got plenty of support starting with Ichiro’s RBI on a fielder’s choice in the first. Carlos Peguero hit a bullet off the top of left centerfield fence for a two run double in the third. Brendan Ryan then hit a screaming grounder with two on in the seventh throught the legs of Luke Gregerson. The ball ricocheted off of second base into shallow center scoring two Mariners. The Padres offense showed life in the seventh starting with Chase Headley’s single. After Brad Hawpe struck out, Cameron Maybin singled to put runners on first and second. Orlando Hudson hit one all the way to the warning track in dead center but it was caught at the wall with no runners tagging. Chris Denorfia then hit a grounder up the middle to centerfield. Cameron Maybin was thrown out going first to third for the third out, but not before Headley crossed the plate cutting the lead to 5-1. Miguel Olivo singled and stole second with one out in the ninth. He then scored on Franklin Gutierrez’s single to put the Mariners up 6-1.
