Carlos Quentin: Short-Term Solution for LF (That’s a good thing) PDF Print E-mail
2011 Season - 2011 Season

I had a trade-analysis article done. It was finished… But then Bud Black says that Carlos Quentin will be the Padres primary left-fielder.

Scrap article and start over…

In my first piece I argued that Quentin should play RF for the Padres thereby allowing Kyle Blanks to play LF thereby relegating Will Venable to either the bench or trade-bait status. But since the decision has been made to play Quentin in LF different analysis is required.

First, let’s look at Carlos Quentin. His career MLB slash-line is: .252/.346/.490. Furthermore his minor league slash line was: .314/.429/.527. This tells us that he has a considerable ceiling. I always look at what MLB players did in the minors (especially if a player has drastically divergent seasons, as is the case with Carlos).

In Carlos’ first MLB season, with Arizona, he hit .253/.342/.530 in 166 AB. In his second season, also with Arizona, he hit .214/.298/.349 in 229 AB… Then Carlos had one really good season with Chicago hitting .287/.394/.571 in 480 AB. Since then his OPS has varied from .779 to .839 while his batting average varied from .236 to .254 (his BA did improve each of the last two seasons).

What should we expect in Petco? That’s a great question and if anyone tells you they’re certain of the answer, don’t listen to them. Is he a creation of the White Sox’ smallish park? Well, he hit more HR on the road last year than at home (but over his career with the Pale Hose he has hit more at home). Is he someone that can rebound towards his .960 OPS season? Probably not… But he is good bet to improve on his career .836 OPS.

2011 Season - Know Thy Enemy

azsnakepitWith the Padres in Arizona this weekend, I hit up Jim of AZSnakePit.com to find out the latest with the leaders in the NL West.

Going into the series with the Padres the DBacks hold a three game lead over the Giants.  At what point will DBacks fans start to buy in?

Not yet: we mentioned 'magic numbers' on the 'Pit for the first time on Thursday, and that felt incredibly daring! I was just, writing earlier tonight, that I still keep expecting to wake up from this season - probably to find our record reversed. The past couple of years have seen all our hopes and aspirations cruelly shattered by hard reality, which is why it's hard not to be waiting for the wheels to fall off. While there's any chance it can be blown [and I'm sure I don't have to draw Padres' fans a picture of how late that can happen...], part of me will remain detached and pessimistic. Only if/when we clinch, then I go full-bore into enthusiasm, because anything beyond that would completely be icing on an already tasty, if entirely unexpected, cake.

2011 Season - Good, Bad, and Ugly

WP: Chad Qualls  (4-3)
LP: Dan Wheeler (0-1)
SV: Heath Bell (19)

With Mat Latos, and the Padres Bullpen, the Padres claw, scrap, and fight the proverbial Goliath in Fenway Park and earn their first interleague win of the 2011 campaign. In addition, Padres snap a six game losing skid and look to potentially take a series win Wednesday in Boston in the rubber-match.

The Good

Nick Hundley (2-3, 1B, 2B, R, K): Nick is showing signs of his pre-DL days by putting solid contact on the ball and getting on base.

Mat Latos (5.2IP 10H 4R 4ER 4BB 7K): At first it might appear as if he had a bad day with that line, but one has to consider that he went up against probably half of the American League all-star lineup today. He sent seven Red Sox straight back to the dugout and he was able to bounce back after giving up runs. Mat never let an inning break out of hand.

2011 Season - Know Thy Enemy

With the Padres heading up to San Francisco to take on the Giants, I hit up Grant of McCoveyChronicles.com to find out the latest with the defending champs.

mccoveychronWith Buster Posey out for the season, who do you think can step up and help the Giants offense?

Knowing Bochy's preferences, it's going to have to be a veteran who did it last year. Aubrey Huff, Andres Torres, Cody Ross ... one of those guys is going to have to be the same player they were last year and soon.

The Giants have been hit hard with injuries, do you expect the team to get back on track once a few key players return?

Maybe when Carlos Beltran comes back, things will be different, but its not like he was lighting the world on fire when he was in there. If the Giants could get Posey and Freddy Sanchez back at the same time, well that's a different story, but just Beltran and maybe Torres? Eh, that's pretty close to what they're throwing out there.

The Padres were unceremoniously greeted in Fenway Park as the Red Sox pelted the Friars 14-5 on a 10 run 7th inning in which former Padre, Adrian Gonzalez contributed to the onslaught.

The Good

Chase Headley: 4-5, 3 1B, 2B, 2R. Solid plate appearances by Chase, waited for the pitch he wanted and put it in play and contributed a couple of runs.
