Sharing is Caring

Headley2Chase Headley has been a fixture on the Padres since 2008, a slick fielding, switch hitting third baseman.  Chase was on pace to have the best offensive year of his career in 2011 and merited All Star consideration.  Most fans associate third base as a power position, but in this day and age, you don't have very many Alex Rodriguez and Evan Longoria types.  Those players are now the exception than the rule.

Combine that with Headley playing in Petco National Park and you are going to end up with a guy that focuses on driving the ball and getting on base.  This season in limited action (113 games) Chase had 110 hits, 28 doubles, and an impressive live of .289/.374/.399./773.

Provided by Baseball-Reference.com: View Original TableI had an opportunity to catch up with Chase.  We talked about off season conditioning, Steeler Nation, and Vince Vaughn.

Steve: You bulked up prior to dominating in AA and AAA, then lost weight to be more agile to handle the outfield.  This year you bulked up again.  How do you feel the extra weight helped you and what’s the plan for this offseason?

Chase: I started the season about ten pounds heavier this year than last year.  I definitely felt better carrying the extra weight throughout the season. Unfortunately, my injury prevented me from playing much in August and September and that would have been the time that I think the extra weight would have helped the most.  I plan on coming into spring about the same weight this year.

Steve: Who was your favorite baseball player growing up?

Chase: My favorite player growing up was Ken Griffey Jr.

Steve: Given the fact that the Padres have a few top prospects at the 3B position (Darnell, Forsythe, Gyorko) and you are going into your second year of potentially four years of arbitration, is there any concern about being traded in the future?

Chase: As a player, being traded is always a possibility.  I try not to worry about it because I have no control over the situation.  We do have some good young players coming up and I think that it bodes well for the organization going forward.  I love playing in San Diego and would love to be a Padre for a long time, but all I can control is my effort to become a better player each and every day.

Headley1Steve: Who has been the most influential person in your baseball career?

Chase: I have had many influential people help me to get where I am today.  If I had to pick one or two, I would say my parents because they sacrificed a ton of time and money to give me the opportunity to play against the best competition growing up.
Steve: What do you think you would be doing now if you weren't playing baseball?

Chase: If I wasn't playing baseball, I would definitely be working in sports in some manner.  I have always had interest in anatomy, so I could see myself working as an athletic trainer or in sports medicine.
Steve: Who is the prankster in the clubhouse and what's their best work?

Chase: There is a lot of pranks going on in the clubhouse at any give time.  My favorite is the dry ice bomb in the trash can close to somebody's locker.

Steve: Do you have any pre-game rituals?

Chase: I really don't have any strict pre-game rituals.  I do have a routine I do in the cage before every game.  At home, I eat two filets of fish and rice before every game.

Steve: What non-baseball teams that you root for?

Chase: My entire family is from Pittsburgh so I am a die hard Steelers fan.  Other than that, I pull for UT in all sports.

Steve: So Brad Pitt just played Billy Beane in "Moneyball," who would you want to play you in a movie about your life?

Chase: I have no idea who could play me in a movie.  I'd love to see Vince Vaughn play me, but he is way to funny to make it realistic.

Big thanks to Chase Headley for his time.  Chase and his wife Casey had their first child this season, a boy named Colt.  Congratulations to the Headley family.
