Corey Brock was kind enough to take time and answer a few questions for Friarhood. The questions are listed in bold with his answers below them. Be sure to check out his work at www.padres.com and follow him on twitter, @followthepadres
(Friarhood) We recently had a poll on friarhood.com asking who fans are most excited about this season (Mat Latos, Everth Cabrera, Will Venable and Kyle Blanks), with Kyle Blanks easily winning. Which player are you most looking forward to watching develop?
(Corey Brock) That’s a tough one. For me, it’s nearly a three-way tie with Latos, Cabrera and Blanks.
Since you asked me to pick one I’ll say Cabrera. I want to see how his defensive skills sharpen as he gets older and gets more experience and how he handles hitting at the top of the lineup and doing the things (being patient, taking walks, hitting the ball on the ground, stealing bases, knowing when to run, etc.) it takes to success there. I think this guy has immense raw talent and that was obvious. What step does he take from here?
(FH) In your mind what will keep Padre fans coming back to Petco in 2010?
(CB) Has to be Adrian Gonzalez. There are few players in the league who can change a game as quickly and, in my opinion, should be feared as much as Gonzalez. There are times when he expands the strike zone and tries to do too much, but this guy has an amazing ability to barrel-up a ball. He’s as good as
letting a ball get deep on him and taking it the other way, with power, no less, than I’ve seen in a while.
(FH) Have we seen the best of Chase Headley in your opinion?
![]() (CB) Headley is a tough one. I think this is a pivotal year for him. I think that in the past there’s been an internal split in the organization of what this guy is and what he’ll become. His swing is a little long at times and he’ll have to show he’s better at handling a ball inside, especially from the left side. I like him as a player. He’ll take his walks, understands the game and is a heady player. Could be a big season for him.
(FH) Although Hoyer continues to all but deny an Adrian Gonzalez trade, how do you see this situation resolving?
(CB) Gonzalez will be with the team on Opening Day, but if the Padres struggle and are way out of it by July and it appears the organization thinks he won’t sign a long-term deal here or they can’t afford it, they’ll move him.
(FH) Given all the young arms that the Padres now have who do you think fills out the rotation in 2010?
(CB) The rotation, as it stands today, would have to be Young, Correia, Richard, Latos and either LeBlanc or Stauffer. I need to, and so does the team, see more from Gallagher and Poreda to know they can handle a spot in the rotation. That could happen if they prove so in the spring.
(FH) Any cool features we can look forward to this season on Padres.com?
(CB) Cool features? Well, I like to think Padres.com, as well as all the team sites on MLB.com, offer the best comprehensive coverage, video and audio, out there. We’ll continue to push the Twitter (@FollowThePadres) where you can get the latest updates on the team. We’ve got a few surprises in store for Spring Training as well. Stay tuned!
(FH) Last year the Padres introduced the 5 for $5 deal, have you caught wind of anything we can look forward to for 2010?
(CB) New for 2010? The change in games times is something I think fans will get a kick out of. Other than that, I’m not sure. That’s all handled within the organization. But I know team president Tom Garfinkel is all about creating a better fan experience, so I would expect the in-game entertainment to improve. Personally, I would push for more Night Ranger during pregame. But that’s just me.
