SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres announced a number of roster moves today. The club has selected right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass from Double-A San Antonio, reinstated outfielder Cameron Maybin from the 15-day disabled list and placed right-handed pitcher Aaron Harang on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 10, with a right foot contusion. In addition, the club has optioned catcher Kyle Phillips to Triple-A Tucson and designated left-handed pitcher Aaron Poreda for assignment. Bass is scheduled to start the Padres 5:40 p.m. PT game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field tonight in his Major League debut. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcements.
Bass, 23, has gone 7-3 with a 3.41 ERA (26 ER/68.2 IP), a .244 (62-for-254) opponents batting average and 63 strikeouts against 17 walks in 12 starts this season for Triple-A Tucson and Double-A San Antonio. Of those 12 starts, 11 have been for San Antonio. The right-hander was originally signed by the Padres as a fifth-round selection in the 2008 First-Year Player Draft out of Wayne State University (MI). Scheduled to make the start in his Major League debut tonight for San Diego, he will be the third player to reach the Majors from the 2008 Draft for the Padres, with infielder Logan Forsythe and outfielder Blake Tekotte having also made their Major League debuts this season. Across four minor league seasons in the Padres (2008-11) organization, he has gone 29-16 with a 2.96 ERA (120 ER/364.2 IP) and 305 strikeouts against 93 walks in 93 games, 66 starts.
Maybin, 24, was placed on the 15-day disabled list on June 1, retroactive to May 28, with right knee inflammation. In three rehab starts for Triple-A Tucson, two in center field and one as the designated hitter, he went 2-for-10 with a double, RBI, run scored, walk, two strikeouts and one stolen base. In 50 games for San Diego this season, the outfielder has hit .254 (45-for-177) with six doubles, two triples, five home runs, 15 RBI, 24 runs scored and seven stolen bases.
Harang, 33, has gone 7-2 with a 3.71 ERA (33 ER/80.0 IP) and 55 strikeouts against 25 walks over 13 starts for San Diego this season. The San Diego native has already passed his season win total from each of the last three seasons, his most wins in a season since a career-high 16 victories in both 2006 and 2007 for Cincinnati. The veteran was signed as a free agent this past offseason on December 6, 2010. Originally signed by the Texas Rangers as a sixth-round selection in the 1999 First-Year Player Draft, he has gone 88-89 with a 4.30 ERA (731 ER/1531.2 IP) and 1260 strikeouts against 432 walks in 253 games, 247 starts, over parts of 10 Major League seasons with the Oakland Athletics (2002-03), Cincinnati Reds (2003-10) and Padres (2011).
Phillips, 27, has hit .239 (11-for-46) with two doubles, two home runs, eight RBI, seven runs scored and five walks against eight strikeouts in 21 games for San Diego this season. The left-handed-hitter has made 12 starts for the Padres this year, all behind the plate. He has thrown out five of 13 (38.5 %) attempted base stealers this season. In 19 games for Double-A San Antonio this year, he hit .316 (24-for-76) with four doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI, 10 runs scored and four walks against just one strikeout. Acquired by the Padres from the Toronto Blue Jays on June 25 last season, he has hit .250 (16-for-64) with five doubles, two home runs, 10 RBI, eight runs scored and five walks against 12 strikeouts over two Major League seasons with the Blue Jays (2009) and Padres (2011).
Poreda, 24, has gone 2-2 with a 7.31 ERA (26 ER/32.0 IP) and 34 strikeouts against 33 walks in 23 games, one start, for Triple-A Tucson this season. The left-hander was acquired by the Padres on July 31, 2009 in the five-player trade that sent Jake Peavy to the Chicago White Sox. Originally signed by the White Sox as a first-round selection (25th overall) in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Poreda has gone 20-20 with a 3.55 ERA (158 ER/400.1 IP) and 355 strikeouts against 222 walks in 121 games, 56 starts, over parts of five minor league seasons in the White Sox (2007-09) and Padres (2009-11) organizations.
