SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres announced today they have selected infielder/outfielder Jesus Guzman from Triple-A Tucson and designated infielder Jorge Cantu for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcement.

Guzman, 27, has hit .332 (81-for-244) with 22 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 57 RBI, 40 runs scored and 34 walks against 42 strikeouts for a .423 on-base percentage and .529 slugging percentage over 63 games for Tucson this season.  The Venezuelan native turned 27 years old this past Tuesday on June 14.  He was signed by the Padres this past offseason on January 6 as a minor league free agent.  Guzman made his Major League debut for the San Francisco Giants in 2009, hitting .250 (5-for-20) over 12 games in his only Big League campaign.  Originally signed by the Seattle Mariners as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2000, he has hit .302 (1181-for-3916) with 239 doubles, 32 triples, 117 home runs, 642 RBI, 635 runs scored and 404 walks against 721 strikeouts in 1,036 games across 11 minor league seasons in the Mariners (2001-07), Oakland Athletics (2008), Giants (2009-10) and Padres (2011) organizations.

Cantu, 29, has hit .194 (28-for-144) with four doubles, three home runs, 16 RBI, eight runs scored and seven walks against 28 strikeouts in 57 games for the Padres this season.  The infielder has started 30 games for San Diego, including 21 at first base and nine at third base.  He was signed by the Padres as a free agent this past offseason on January 26.  Originally signed by the Tampa Bay Rays as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 1998, he has hit .271 (847-for-3128) with 203 doubles, five triples, 104 home runs, 476 RBI, 367 runs scored and 189 walks against 559 strikeouts in 847 games played over eight Major League seasons with the Rays (2004-07), Cincinnati Reds (2007), Florida Marlins (2008-10), Texas Rangers (2010) and Padres (2011).
