Official Press Release provided by the San Diego Padres Media Department: SAN DIEGO – The San Diego Padres announced today they have named Phil Plantier hitting coach. Executive Vice President/General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement.
Plantier, 42, will enter his second season in the Padres organization in 2012 after having served as hitting coach and interim manager at Single-A Lake Elsinore this past season. He helped lead the Storm to their first California League Championship since 2001 as the team scored 828 runs to rank second-most among all Single-A clubs in 2011 and ninth-most across all levels of minor league baseball. Before joining the Padres, he served as hitting coach and manager at the Double-A level as well as one season as hitting coordinator in the Seattle Mariners organization.
“Phil brings a strong passion for the Padres organization,” Byrnes said. “He played an integral role in the success of our minor league system this past year. His knowledge of the game and experience working with young hitters will be an invaluable asset to our clubhouse and this organization.”
The left-handed hitter played parts of eight Major League seasons with the Boston Red Sox (1990-92), Padres (1993-94, 1995, 1997), Houston Astros (1995), Oakland Athletics (1996) and St. Louis Cardinals (1997). Originally signed as an 11th-round selection in the 1987 First-Year Player Draft by the Red Sox, he hit .243 (457-for-1883) with 90 doubles, three triples, 91 home runs, 292 RBI, 260 runs scored and 237 walks against 476 strikeouts over 610 games played in his Big League career. The former Padre had his best season in 1993 for San Diego when he was named the Padres most valuable player by the San Diego Chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America (BBWAA), hitting .240 (111-for-462) with 20 doubles, one triple, 34 home runs, 100 RBI and 67 runs scored in 138 games that season.
A native of Manchester, N.H., Plantier resides in Poway, Calif., with his wife Jennifer and their three children. Since retiring from baseball, he has earned a bachelors degree in social science from California State University San Marcos.
