SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, N.Y., announced today that Roberto Alomar has been elected as part of its class of 2011.  Alomar, who was named on 90 percent of the ballots cast, is joined by right-handed pitcher Bert Blyleven.  He received 523 votes, the third highest total in Hall of Fame voting history.

Originally signed by San Diego as an undrafted free agent in 1985, Alomar spent the first three seasons of his 17-year Hall of Fame career in a Padres uniform.  Beginning with his Major League debut on April 22, 1988, he hit .283 (497-for-1754) with 78 doubles, 12 triples, 22 home runs, 157 RBI, 246 runs scored and 90 stolen bases over the 1988-90 campaigns with San Diego.  He ranks second among the Padres all-time second basemen in games, hits, doubles, triples, home runs and runs scored.

Over his 17 Major League seasons with the Padres (1988-90), Toronto Blue Jays (1991-95), Baltimore Orioles (1996-98), Cleveland Indians (1999-2001), New York Mets (2002-03), Chicago White Sox (2003, 04) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2004), Alomar hit .300 (2724-for-9073) with 504 doubles, 80 triples, 210 home runs, 1,134 RBI, 1,508 runs scored and 474 stolen bases in 2,397 games.  He was also named to 12 consecutive All-Star teams from 1990-2001.  As a second baseman, Alomar ranks among the top Major Leaguers all-time in games (1st), hits (1st), doubles (2nd), triples (2nd), home runs (6th), RBI (2nd), runs scored (1st) and stolen bases (1st).
