SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today announced that they have agreed to terms on one-year contracts with right-handed pitchers Mike Adams, Heath Bell and Tim Stauffer, infielder Chase Headley and outfielder Ryan Ludwick.  Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcements.

Adams, 32, went 4-1 with a 1.76 ERA (13 ER/66.2 IP) and 73 strikeouts against 23 walks in a career-high 70 relief appearances for the Padres last season.  The right-hander posted the third-lowest ERA among all National League relievers and held opposing hitters to a .196 (48-for-245) batting average.  He also recorded 38 holds, the second-most ever in a season in Major League history behind teammate Luke Gregerson’s 40 in 2010, passing both Scott Linebrink (36 in 2006) and Tom Gordon (36 in 2004).

Bell, 33, went 6-1 with a career-best 1.93 ERA (15 ER/70.0 IP), a career-high 47 saves in 50 opportunities and 86 strikeouts against 28 walks over 67 appearances last season.  The right-hander led the Majors with a 94.0 save percentage and recorded the second-most saves in a season in franchise history, behind Trevor Hoffman’s 53 in 1998.  He also ended the 2010 campaign on a streak of converting each of his last 34 save opportunities.  Following the season, Bell was named the Padres Pitcher of the Year by the San Diego chapter of the BBWAA as well as recipient of the Rolaids Relief Man Award for the National League, MLB’s Delivery Man of the Year and Sporting News’ National League Reliever of the Year.

Stauffer, 28, went 6-5 with a 1.85 ERA (17 ER/82.2 IP) and 61 strikeouts against 24 walks in 32 appearances (seven starts) last season.  He set career-highs in appearances, wins, innings pitched and strikeouts.  The right-hander finished the 2010 season by making six starts and going 3-2 with a 2.10 ERA (8 ER/34.1 IP) over that span.

Headley, 26, hit .264 (161-for-610) with 11 home runs, 29 doubles, three triples, 58 RBI, 77 runs scored and 17 stolen bases in 161 games played last season.  He set career-highs in several offensive categories including games played, hits, triples, runs scored and stolen bases.  Headley started 156 games last year, all at third base, ranking fourth among all Major League position players with 1407.2 innings played and third among all National League third basemen with a .966 fielding percentage.

Ludwick, 32, was acquired on July 31, 2010 from St. Louis in a three-team trade with the Cleveland Indians.  The outfielder hit a combined .251 (123-for-490) with 17 home runs, 27 doubles, two triples, 69 RBI and 63 runs scored in 136 games played between St. Louis and San Diego last season.  He ranked fifth in the National League with a .345 (40-for-116) batting average with runners in scoring position.

With today’s announcements the Padres have agreed to terms on contracts for the 2011 season with all arbitration-eligible players on their 40-man roster.
