SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The San Diego Padres today announced that they have claimed right-handed pitcher Samuel Deduno off waivers from the Colorado Rockies and designated infielder/outfielder Oscar Salazar for assignment. Executive Vice President/General Manager Jed Hoyer made the announcement.
Deduno, 27, made his Major League debut in 2010 with the Rockies, allowing one run over four relief appearances (2.2 IP). Originally signed by the Rockies as a non-drafted free agent in 2003, he has gone 40-37 with a 4.35 ERA (306 ER/633.0 IP) working almost exclusively as a starter over his 120 minor league appearances (119 starts). He made 10 minor league starts between Single-A Tri-City and Triple-A Colorado Springs in 2010, combining to go 3-3 with a 3.83 ERA (20 ER/47.0 IP).

He hit .251 (60-for-239) with the club, tallying 12 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 38 RBI and 31 runs scored. Over parts of four Major League seasons with the Detroit Tigers (2004), Baltimore Orioles (2008-09) and San Diego Padres (2009-10), Salazar has combined to hit .269 (100-for-372) with 16 doubles, two triples, 14 home runs, 62 RBI and 50 runs scored in 199 games.
