2012 Report Card: Second Base

Second base for the Padres in 2012 was a roller coaster to say the least. After rumors that the Padres were trying to practically give away Orlando Hudson (the Padres #3 hitter on opening day 2011), he started 2012 with the club and continued to struggle at the plate.
Hudson was not a fan favorite and his effort in the field left a lot to be desired. The Padres finally grew weary of his act and cut ties with him in mid May. Enter Alexi Amarista AKA the Little Ninja. Amarista acquired in a trade with the Angels, stepped right in and held the job until June when Logan Forsythe returned from the 60-day DL. The two players platooned for the remainder of the season.
As mentioned, Hudson was a hot mess and wasn’t able to bring much to the table on the field or in the clubhouse. Amarista proved to be a solid utility player taking the role away from Andy Parrino and Logan Forsythe established himself as a guy that hits LHP very well and is a solid solution at second base.
