Fort Wayne Player and Pitcher of the Month: June 2012
Midway through the month of June the Padres promoted the most prolific performer of the early part of the month to Lake Elsinore. Infielder Casey McElroy was hitting .513 when promoted to high A with 10 extra base hits in 10 games. The crowded Fort Wayne infield was easier to manage after his promotion.
The player to step up for the team was infielder Travis Whitmore. His .296/.367/.437 line for June topped the other players. He played in 19 games with 71 AB over that period with 5 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR and 8 RBI. The 24 yr. old has played all over the infield, with the exception of shortstop. He has also been the DH on occasion. More than half of his playing time is at 1B although he was drafted as a 2B in the 35th round of the 2011 draft.
As a left-handed hitter that can play almost the entire infield, he is another of the Padres talented, athletic infielders who can hit.
OF Yeison Asencio (the former Yoan Alcantara) gets a mention for his remarkable power ability. He hit .297/.318/.515 for the month of June with 4 2B, 6 HR and 20 RBI. Normally, as a 22 yr. old, this would get him the nod but Whitmore is just 24 yr. old with great versatility.
