Tim Stauffer Signs and the Latest on Rick Porcello

Tim Stauffer

Tim Stauffer

The Padres have announced they agreed to minor league contracts with Tim Stauffer, Freddy Garcia, and LHP Arturo Lopez.

Tim Stauffer is working his way back from elbow surgery and is reportedly only two weeks behind schedule.  Stauffer was selected by the Padres, fourth overall in the 2003 draft.  Following his breakout 2010 campaign, Stauffer set career highs in starts 31, innings 185.2, wins 9, and strikeouts with 128.

Lopez 29, spent 2012 pitching in the Mexican League with Diablos Rojos del Mexico.  Lopez debuted in 2009 with the Padres.

Ken Rosenthal feels that the price of Rick Porcello is rising and the Padres are out of the race.  Also feels that they should look at trading for guys such as Aaron Harang or Luke Hochevar.

Stauffer, O’Sullivan, Garcia, Erlin, Ross, Bass, Kelly, Stults to compete for 2 spots (Richard, Volquez and Marquis are likely in the rotation)…with Cashner and Leubke likely to return by midseason (Weiland will not return this year in time to pitch). I think Stults should be given the benefit of the doubt since he pitched so well in more than just a few games last year (and he had some decent numbers in previous years…seems to me to be a bit of a “find.”) Thus, there is really only one spot for six pitchers. SURELY ONE of the six will find some magic!? The bullpen will be lights out this year so the starters just need to get through 5 and keep the game close…If the Pads do well this year it will be in large part to Buddy’s game management.
