Venable Signs 2-Year Contract Extension

The incredible hot-streak by Padres outfielder Will Venable was punctuated by an exclamation point today, as the Padres have announced that they have signed Venable to a two-year contract extension amounting to approximately $8.5 million. General Manager Josh Byrnes made the announcement Tuesday morning.

Venable, 30, has been with the Padres organization since making his debut in 2008 and is now guaranteed to stay with the club through the 2015 season. Venable has certainly made a name for himself this season, becoming more consistent in his plate appearances and batting .273 on the season with 20 homeruns, 49 RBI and 15 stolen bases. On top of that, Venable was named as the National League Player of the Week on August 18th.

The $8.5 million salary that Venable will be receiving for the 2014 and 2015 seasons more than doubles his career earnings of $5.4 million. Venable has been known to be a streaky player at times, showing brilliance later on in the season after starting off cold.

Will has posted a .257 batting average over his career with 65 homeruns and 33 triples. Additionally, his slugging percentage of .510 leads all National League outfielders this season. He is second to only Mike Trout of the Angeles for the Major League lead in slugging.

The veteran outfielder has also had his name come up in discussions for potentially earning a Rawlings Gold Glove award for his fielding this season. With 25 games left to play this season, number 25 for the Padres has a chance to make a last minute run for such honors and we certainly hope that Venable remains hot.
