“Hope springs eternal.” - Alexander Pope
The Padres are pretty much done for this off-season. Spring Training is closing in; the payroll is projected to be in the $50 million range, where Jeff Moorad said it would be. One has to figure the Padres will now draw no more cards. With a new GM seated at the table, never a better time to review Josh Byrnes’ first time cooking at the Hot Stove for the Friars.
First off, Byrnes took over the post on Halloween. For the sake of clarity: those decisions occurring prior to his control of the team will be omitted. With that established, let’s look at the moves made so far and try to develop some idea of a common thread.
NOVEMBER 16 – Signed OF/1B Mark Kotsay to a 1-year contract.
Before dismissing this move as lacking importance, consider: Kotsay was given a guaranteed contract. They didn’t invite him to camp in late January and give him a minor league deal. They gave him the money. That means, at least to me, there was some demand for Kotsay. Byrnes had a desire to lock him up rather than risk losing him. Also, the Padres have shown the necessity and the luxury of having a quality left-handed bat off the bench. In 1998, John Vander wal and Mark Sweeney helped the team with a division. Of course, Sweeney was back with the team in 2005 and was out of his mind in limited duty (.294/.395/.466).
Bottom line: Seems like a move made to win if not now, then soon.

The “twitterverse” was abuzz this early evening after the Padres unveiled their latest installment of the ever-changing attire they don on the diamond. No major overhauls happened as expected, but more of a minor tweaking to each of the four uniforms. They also introduced three new logos for 2012, all of which will be featured as patches on the new jerseys.
“I like the patches. They are cool”- @luigichargerfan
“Bland and Boring, but they change them every couple of years so who cares? Had High hopes but knew better than to get my hopes up.” -@ThisIsSan_Diego

Gotta love Karma.
Seriously, I am loving me some symbolic justice right about now.
Now I know how Cleveland Cavalier fans felt after the NBA Finals, because San Diego’s LeBron pulled a, well… a LeBron.
Adrian Gonzalez abandoned his home town. Before you scroll to the bottom of this page and start your comments, read on. Logic dictates a careful analysis of this claim, which I have prepared for the audience.
First, let’s be clear on a single, important issue. Adrian has every right in the world to force a trade from the Padres by repeatedly stating, to anyone who would listen, that he would not sign another contract in San Diego for a discount. He has the right to do whatever he wants. He is not a bad person for doing what he did. I am, in no way, challenging Adrian on a personal level. All I care about, as is the case with most athletes, is what happens on the field. So take any opinions and criticisms as what they are: the feelings of a sports fan.

Go Rays.
Let me type that again.
Go Rays.
Screw the Boston Red Sox.
I have come to a startling revelation in the past few weeks or so, while watching the Red Sox melt down. As I sit, night after night, and laugh out loud at the pathetic faces on Tim Wakefield, John Lackey and David Ortiz I realize just how much I enjoy the misery that is the Red Sox this September. For a while I didn’t know why.

You may see a lot of outlets simulate NFL games on Madden NFL 12 to gain insight on the games to come. We at the Friarhood thought we’d do the same to see how the digital Padres match up against the NL West leading Diamondbacks.
I did so using Major League Baseball 2K11 for the Xbox 360 console. I used up to date rosters and set the time and weather to what is predicted for Friday, September 16th's night game at Petco Park. I used the probable pitchers as they are scheduled with Tim Stauffer going against Wade Miley. Since Miley is a lefty I decided to send out a lineup with Bud Black written all over it.
