Excited yet Padres fans? We’re about a week away from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training and that means baseball is back. It’s been a busy offseason with tons of player movement. How is the Friars opening day roster going to look after all of the wheeling-and-dealing? Despite the multitude of player moves, I don’t imagine there will be many questions to be answered during the exhibition season. I’ll take a stab at forecasting the Padres 25-man roster as they break camp in this post with explanations for each.

Byrnes Executing the Plan PDF Print E-mail

Newly appointed Padres GM Josh Byrnes has been a busy bee so far this winter. Since assuming the leadership mantle from his predecessor, Jed Hoyer, Byrnes has: Traded Mat Latos, the club’s best starting pitcher; added power-hitting corner OF Carlos Quentin; brought in veteran OF-1B and clubhouse leader Mark Kotsay as a free agent; upgraded at backup catcher with John Baker; replaced outgoing UFA closer Heath Bell with Huston Street; dealt one of the prize pieces from last winter’s Adrian Gonzalez deal, Anthony Rizzo, in a deal for reliever Andrew Cashner; and re-signed nine of the team’ eleven potential arbitration-eligible players ahead of the deadline to exchange salary numbers (a tenth, Clayton Richard, agreed to terms shortly afterwards). Undoubtedly, while the team has mostly steered clear of free agency, Byrnes has turned over a large chunk of the club’s roster in short order.

While it’s nearly impossible to guess how the on-field product will perform given the high turnover rate from last season, one thing is clear; Byrnes has a plan and he has wasted little time implementing it. His goal this winter was to continue to add to the deepening pool of young talent while improving the team for an unlikely but hopeful postseason run next season. Yes, the Padres will obviously miss Latos and the trade that sent him to Cincinnati for a prospect-heavy return is difficult to view as a step to improve the product on the field nest season. But Byrnes has still accomplished both goals with the plethora of deals he has made as GM.

Let’s take a look at how some of Byrnes’ winter acquisitions will impact the Friars organization whether for just this season, the future or both starting with the Latos move.

Friarhood Christmas Wish List PDF Print E-mail

xmas_listWith the Thanksgiving holiday behind us and the calendar flipped to December the shopping season is upon us. That’s also true in the baseball world where the annual Winter Meetings and the trades and free agent signings that generally accompany the event are right around the corner. So, what will the Friars do, if anything, at this year’s Winter Meetings? We’re not sure but the Friarhood staff, in honor of the Christmas holiday, has compiled our Friars wish list and sent it off to Saint Nick in the hope Padres fans get something nice under our collective tree.

Among the Friarhood staff sending Santa wish lists were: Steve, Glen Miller, Brandon Cline, Matt Rennick and Cheri Bell. Here’s what we’d like to see for our favorite baseball team this Christmas:

Extensions

Everyone had this on their list. The popular extension candidate was CF Cameron Maybin. Maybin is Brandon’s “favorite player.”

Steve would rather see the Friars broach the “E” word with the camps of pitchers Mat Latos and Tim Stauffer before doing anything with Maybin. He feels the club and Maybin are “too far apart” in talks and would like to see “confirmation that Maybin isn’t a flash in the pan.”

Bottom line is essentially every Padres fan wants to see the ownership group show a commitment to building a winner and extending the young talent before they get too expensive is a good first step.

Friarhood Roundtable: New Duds a Dud? PDF Print E-mail

padres_petco_patchWelcome to the Friarhood Round Table; the newest feature here on your favorite Padres fan site. The staff here at Friarhood is going to take a topic and offer their takes on said topic. We should be able to cover all sides of any subject with interesting arguments and discussion.

First up are thoughts on the Friars new duds. Here’s what we think; tell us how you feel in the comments section.
Steve
Lack of Brown?
It would have been nice to see some brown, but I'll be happy with a throwback Friday once a month.

Likes?
I like the new secondary, with Petco in the back.  I didn't have a
problem with the old one and I could care less for shampoo references (possibly because I 'm bald and grumpy).

Dislikes?
Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see of a need for a change.   It
seems like the team changes something with the uniform annually.  I'm not a fan of the piping. I also don't like that the team is so similar to the dodgers (or insert generic team with blue).  At first I liked the circular logo, until I saw this
http://websoulsurfer.blogspot.com/2011/11/another-year-another-change...

Lastly, the blue jersey was my favorite, so I was sad to see that one go.  As other people have said, it looks like a bp jersey.

Brandon
I'm a champion of the "bring back the brown" movement, no question but
let's think about the radical change in color scheme. First of all,
how much blue do you see around PETCO Park? Quite a lot. Now think
about how much it would cost the Padres organization to repaint
everything blue to brown. Time, material, labor, I'm sure these things
factored into the Garf's bean counters.

Secondly, a lot of the people championing the "Bring Back the Brown" want us to return to ORIGINAL color schemes. Remember, these colors were from the 1970s, a decade which we all consider downright hideous in all things fashionable. You're going to stir up a lot of those emotions if you start mixing brown and yellow. Bring back brown, yes! But bring back brown in 2011 not 1971.
Ernie Padaon
As soon as I found out BROWN was not going to be part of the jerseys, I knew I wasn't going to be satisfied. I saw that the Orioles were bringing back the cartoon bird back to their hats and it was a punch in the gut.

Can we just get back to something that stands out in the crowd, rather than blending in with the rest. The new unis are simpler and more traditional, so they accomplished their goal. At least we don't look like the Brewers anymore. I did just run across the new Marlins jerseys and am pleased that we don't have to sport that garbage. WHEW!

Matt Rennick
I for one never have swayed one way or the other on the uniforms. I grew up in the 90s and have always been partial to those.

I think the new ones are just okay. I know they will grow on me and I will learn to love them.

I do like the new logo with Petco in the background. I think that is a great improvement.

The piping is a little off in my opinion as well. I think that is what is ultimately holding me off.

As far as the colors, to me it doesn't make sense to bring back the brown now.

This is a look back to the PCL which I think is perfect because we play in Downtown again, not Mission Valley.

Last season we saw the sand go away and the greys make an appearance. I personally liked the sands, so I wasn't entirely pleased.

However, this season I think the greys are the best looking ones.

Leslie Forsythe
To be honest I was really underwhelmed by the new uniforms.  The changes aren't really that drastic (more generic blue and a couple logo variations, yay) so I kind of didn't see the need to put the energy and expense into such "yawn" unis.  That said, I do like the blue jersey with the SD logo, feels a little retro.

I am so very much in favor of bringing back the brown, but I agree, it needs to be done right.  I don't think people necessarily want an exact replica of what we wore in the '70s, we can all agree that's not exactly flattering... I could see something classy like homes in white with brown letters and alternates with a basic brown top/white letters.

... I won't get into my whole thesis on the subject, but the Padres would do well to really cultivate their fans in the 25-40ish age range... we're young enough to have grown up with the Pads as our hometown team and we're nostalgic for brown and appreciate the history, but we're also old enough that we will soon be raising the next generation of diehard Padres fans, if not already.  If we're feeling constantly let down and abandoned by our team and get the feeling that the FO ignores most of our input, well.... not everyone is as loyal as us :)
Cheri Bell
I have a long history with this team and anything from the 70's brings back unpleasant memories (bad teams). So I am not a particular fan of brown, yellow or orange. That said, the current blue is too similar to the Brewers. The update is a slight improvement but minimal.

At this point something similar to the Tucson unis or the PCL throwbacks they wore this last season would be my choice. Call me a maverick.
Those are our opinions, now we want to hear yours.  Sign in and chime in.

Did Hoyer Turn His Back On Padres? PDF Print E-mail
Voice of the Fan - Glen's Gab

HoyerWeeks of rumor finally came to fruition last week when Theo Epstein officially agreed to join the Chicago Cubs as President of Baseball Operations. Unfortunately for the Padres, Epstein managed to convince Padres GM Jed Hoyer, and his assistant in San Diego, Jason McLeod, to join him in the windy city. Owner Jeff Moorad quickly moved to replace Hoyer with Josh Byrnes, his former GM in Arizona where Moorad held the title of CEO and General Partner of the Diamondbacks. Byrnes joined the Friars last December after being fired as GM in Arizona.

Not surprisingly, some Padres fans feel Hoyer abandoned the team; that he took the first opportunity to leave a small-market like San Diego for the riches of Chicago. It’s almost as if he turned his back on the challenge of turning the Padres into a perennial contender, as he had repeatedly said was his goal, in order to take a job with his mentor for a club that doesn’t have the financial restraints San Diego does. On the surface it does look like he took the easy road so-to-speak. But anyone who has experienced a split either in their personal or professional lives knows there are two sides to every story.
