Sharing is Caring
padres_petco_patchWelcome to the Friarhood Round Table; the newest feature here on your favorite Padres fan site. The staff here at Friarhood is going to take a topic and offer their takes on said topic. We should be able to cover all sides of any subject with interesting arguments and discussion.

First up are thoughts on the Friars new duds. Here’s what we think; tell us how you feel in the comments section.

Lack of Brown?
It would have been nice to see some brown, but I'll be happy with a throwback Friday once a month.

Likes?
I like the new secondary, with Petco in the back.  I didn't have a
problem with the old one and I could care less for shampoo references (possibly because I 'm bald and grumpy).

Dislikes?
Maybe it's just me, but I didn't see of a need for a change.   It
seems like the team changes something with the uniform annually.  I'm not a fan of the piping. I also don't like that the team is so similar to the dodgers (or insert generic team with blue).  At first I liked the circular logo, until I saw this

Lastly, the blue jersey was my favorite, so I was sad to see that one go.  As other people have said, it looks like a bp jersey.

I'm a champion of the "bring back the brown" movement, no question but
let's think about the radical change in color scheme. First of all,
how much blue do you see around PETCO Park? Quite a lot. Now think
about how much it would cost the Padres organization to repaint
everything blue to brown. Time, material, labor, I'm sure these things
factored into the Garf's bean counters.

Secondly, a lot of the people championing the "Bring Back the Brown" want us to return to ORIGINAL color schemes. Remember, these colors were from the 1970s, a decade which we all consider downright hideous in all things fashionable. You're going to stir up a lot of those emotions if you start mixing brown and yellow. Bring back brown, yes! But bring back brown in 2011 not 1971.
Ernie Padaon
As soon as I found out BROWN was not going to be part of the jerseys, I knew I wasn't going to be satisfied. I saw that the Orioles were bringing back the cartoon bird back to their hats and it was a punch in the gut.

Can we just get back to something that stands out in the crowd, rather than blending in with the rest. The new unis are simpler and more traditional, so they accomplished their goal. At least we don't look like the Brewers anymore. I did just run across the new Marlins jerseys and am pleased that we don't have to sport that garbage. WHEW!

Matt Rennick
I for one never have swayed one way or the other on the uniforms. I grew up in the 90s and have always been partial to those.

I think the new ones are just okay. I know they will grow on me and I will learn to love them.

I do like the new logo with Petco in the background. I think that is a great improvement.

The piping is a little off in my opinion as well. I think that is what is ultimately holding me off.

As far as the colors, to me it doesn't make sense to bring back the brown now.

This is a look back to the PCL which I think is perfect because we play in Downtown again, not Mission Valley.

Last season we saw the sand go away and the greys make an appearance. I personally liked the sands, so I wasn't entirely pleased.

However, this season I think the greys are the best looking ones.

To be honest I was really underwhelmed by the new uniforms.  The changes aren't really that drastic (more generic blue and a couple logo variations, yay) so I kind of didn't see the need to put the energy and expense into such "yawn" unis.  That said, I do like the blue jersey with the SD logo, feels a little retro.

I am so very much in favor of bringing back the brown, but I agree, it needs to be done right.  I don't think people necessarily want an exact replica of what we wore in the '70s, we can all agree that's not exactly flattering... I could see something classy like homes in white with brown letters and alternates with a basic brown top/white letters.

... I won't get into my whole thesis on the subject, but the Padres would do well to really cultivate their fans in the 25-40ish age range... we're young enough to have grown up with the Pads as our hometown team and we're nostalgic for brown and appreciate the history, but we're also old enough that we will soon be raising the next generation of diehard Padres fans, if not already.  If we're feeling constantly let down and abandoned by our team and get the feeling that the FO ignores most of our input, well.... not everyone is as loyal as us :)
Cheri Bell
I have a long history with this team and anything from the 70's brings back unpleasant memories (bad teams). So I am not a particular fan of brown, yellow or orange. That said, the current blue is too similar to the Brewers. The update is a slight improvement but minimal.

At this point something similar to the Tucson unis or the PCL throwbacks they wore this last season would be my choice. Call me a maverick.
