Cory Robert Luebke
Bats: Right, Throws: Left Height: 6' 4", Weight: 215 lb.
Born: March 4, 1985 in Coldwater, Ohio, US
Drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 18th round of the 2004 MLB June Amateur Draft, the Texas Rangers in the 22nd round of the 2006 MLB June Amateur Draft and the San Diego Padres in the 1st round (63rd) of the 2007 MLB June Amateur Draft.
Cory Luebke will make his MLB debut tonight against the Colorado Rockies. This is a very important and special game for the promising young southpaw but also a very important game for the Padres who have lost 7 straight. The Padres and manager Bud Black have been fairly tight lipped about whether Luebke will become an everyday starter, taking over for one of the struggling pitchers in LeBlanc or Correia, or if he will merely spot start to help ease the work load off the youngsters, mainly Mat Latos.
How the 40-man Roster works:
"Each Major League Baseball team maintains both a 25-man roster and a 40-man roster of players. Players on the 25-man roster are eligible to play in official major league games throughout the season. The 40-man roster includes the players on the 25-man roster plus as many as 15 players who are either on the team's 15-day disabled list or who are in the team's minor league system.
From September 1 through the end of the regular season, any player on the 40-man roster (also referred to as the "expanded roster") is eligible to play in an official regular season game. Many young players make their Major League debuts in this way, as "September call-ups". Players must be on a team's 25-man roster as of August 31 to be eligible for post-season play. The only exception is that a player on the 60-day disabled list may be replaced by another player from the team's 40-man roster (as of August 31) who plays the same position."

The Padres (FO & Co.) have discussed many trading possibilities with Theo Epstein and his former assistant, our rookie GM Jed "the Jedi" Hoyer, according to Peter Abraham and Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.
"The Globe duo believes Boston could have interest in a reliever like Joe Thatcher, and, given the team's excess of outfielders when Jacoby Ellsbury returns, they may match up with San Diego."
Of course he would have.
This is not the old regime where Kevin Towers would go on the 10 o'clock news and tell every GM or "sources" in Baseball who and what/why and (for whom) they were exactly interested in and exactly what prospects or current players on the roster were "available". That is NO bag on KT. AT ALL, I am just saying this regime in contrast to the former regime, is VERY hush hush on EXACTLY what they will, or will NOT do. As much as it is absolutely annoying for us fans that long for trade rumors, I think if anything it's a good thing (to a certain degree) when all is quiet, just not dead!
UPDATE: Dodgers have acquired Scott Podsednik 7/28/10
According to MLBtradrumors.com the Royals are being "bombarded" with interest by NL West teams in regards to Scott Podsednik (Pods). Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports suggests that the Giants, Padres and Dodgers as potential fits.
I could see the (FO) trying to sell a trade to the fans by saying that Pods is a comparable player to Dejesus offensively and would be much cheaper to acquire without giving up top tier talent. I remarked the other day on MLBtradrumors.com that I believed the Padres would make some minor moves if they (the FO) felt that the "big bats" were going to be too pricey. I believe that Podsednik, (309/.353/.399 line with 29 steals in 41 attempts.) Tejeda, ( this year .272/ 7 HR/ 39 RBI) and possibly a Jake Westbrook (6-6 ERA. 4.74/ 42 BB/ 68K/ 1.44 WHIP) via the waiver wire are possible moves that could help the team with veterans players with proven track records while keeping the core players in tact.
