The Tigers designated Dontrelle Willis for assignment to open up a roster spot for Max Scherzer. Willis is still only 28 years old and was a disappointment, to say the least, since coming over from the Florida Marlins prior to the '08 season. Overall, Dontrelle posted a 6.86 ERA in 101 innings with the Detroit Tigers; this year he posted a dismal 4.98 ERA in 43.1 innings. Willis missed time with a variety of ailments including "knee hyper-extension to forearm tightness to anxiety disorder". Dontrelle Williis, former Rookie of the Year is just 4 years removed from his last very productive season with the Marlins in 06' posting a 3.87 ERA in 223.1 innings with a 160 K's with a 274 BBA. It was different story with the Fish in 07', Willis in 205.1 innings pitched had a 5.17 ERA with a 294 BAA with a whopping 87 walks in 241 hits allowed. Obviously the hits were up, the strike outs were down and the control was gone.
I would love if the Padres signed him to a minor league deal. With Stauffer still rehabbing, LeBlanc with a couple poor outings, CY down for god knows how long, and Gallagher thus far being a disappointment, he would add some depth. It would be nice to add more pitching depth to the organization with that "it factor" ability. I know the Padres main concern right now is lack of offense; however, run prevention and pitching depth have been the key thus far this season. I would have to believe that coming to the most extreme pitchers park in all of baseball could only be beneficial to Willis along with arguably the best pitching coach in all of baseball Darren Balsley. In my opinion the Padres need to be aggressive in the small market with low risk, high reward type players like Dontrelle. We as baseball fans here this all the time, pitching, pitching and more pitching. I think if a good guy like Willis can realize his potential, what better place to do that with some of the most forgiving fans in beautiful sunny San Diego and not to mention once again the most forgiving ball park.

"Agent Matt Sosnick told Piecoro that Arizona is "one of the places (Willis) would rather play" (Twitter link). Willis would prefer to play for an NL team on the West Coast (Twitter link), but the Tigers, who designated the lefty for assignment, still have some say in where he goes. They have discussed a trade with the Diamondbacks, who are interested in Willis as a starter."
The Tigers have about a week to determine Willis' future. They could trade him, release him, or put him on waivers. We know he prefers the NL and the West Coast, and reportedly is buying a house in Phoenix that was already in the works before he was DFA. However I couldn't imagine AZ being more enticing than SD, the ball parks are polar opposites.
I wish him goo luck wherever he lands, to me he is one of those guys you find yourself rooting for!
As pointed out in the article, Gallagher has been disappointing, Stauffer is rehabbing, CY is down for who knows how long, possibly for the rest of the year, LeBlanc has been inconsistent lately. Also, Willis is ONLY 28, I am not sure it would affect any youth movement it would add depth!
So my question is, where is the risk?
